OK, posting those links took a while, however, they're books with the art of whatever movie they are I think... I dunno, I recall having seen one or two of them in a book store before, and I googled it and this was what I found... soooo, yeah!

Yep. Another edit: I also found this... although I can't find if you can get the stuff or not, but...

Hmmm, Excellent gift idea. You might still be able to get your hands on an original cel at the Ghibli Museum. I've seen them there before. They aren't cheap, though. The cels made prior to 1994 are hand painted, made for production and the ones made since are computer-rendered--and a little less expensive. I believe they cost between $250 - $400 US.

Thank you very much, I know this can take quite a long time to look for all these links
My first idea is really to get a cel that she can hang on the wall. I fear that the books, after you've read them, they are just buried somewhere....
The site of Ruby Persson, I already saw it, the problem is that this sell took place years ago and the cels are not anymore available.
So, I will take the links for the art books, and I thank you for them, but I will still look for Art prints.

I think that's the only solution yes, but since I'm living in Europe, and no trip planned to Tokyo, I am still wondering how to get hands on these cels.
Prices such as 250-400US$ are a lot but it's ok. It's a very special gift.
Do you think I could contact the Ghbili museum ? Did you visit it ?

One of our members was in Japan until just recently, 'fraid you missed him. That said, although I'm not sure if I have the liberty to say it, dballred works in Tokyo half the time.
I assume that you have tried places like amazon and ebay?

I will likely be visiting the museum next month if my plans hold out. I've been planning my next trip to coincide with the Ponyo release. We can work out an arrangement where you text my cell phone while I'm in the museum. I know that midnight GMT is 9:00 AM in Japan. Details can follow when things are a bit more coalesced.

Yes I tried Amazon and Ebay but saw nothing... Perhaps on Amazon.jp, but it's difficult to search....

Sure it would be really nice from you. Do you often travel to Tokyo ? Did you already visit this museum ?

I visit fairly often--currently once every three months for a few weeks at a time. I've been to the museum many times, but the museum changes themes frequently--and I haven't been there for about a year. Hence, it is time to go again!
The unfortunate aspect here is that we are in the middle of summer. It's a better than even bet that the weekend slots at the museum are already sold out. Usually, there are a few weekdays open at 4:00 PM in July, so that makes it about 7-ish in the morning or later Europe Time. As long as you pay the postage and the price of the cel, I can get it for you with no other charge. In the meantime, set up a Paypal account and do whatever you want by research to be sure you can trust me.
The main thing is that you need to be on-line on the day I am there so you can e-mail my cell phone. If there's something there, I will be able to describe it so you can make the call whether to buy it.

The time is not a problem, I could wake up in the middle of the night if needed. But do you mean that you have to book to visit ?
I will pay the postage and the price of the cel of course. I can send you something from Switzerland to thank you
I think I already have a Paypal account I opened for ebay even if I haven't been using it for quite a long time now.
Why do you need the email on your cell phone ? Perhaps it's to get the payment confirmation from Paypal ?
I'll check on the forum to get further news from you as well as on my email.

Yes, you need to make advanced reservations for one of the four daily slots (10AM, noon, 2PM and 4PM). In Japan, you can only get the tickets at the Lawson Station convenience store. In the summer, the weekends sell out in minutes after the next month's slots are opened (10 AM Japan Time on the tenth of the month prior. For July, that was the 10th of June). Weekdays go quickly, too, but the 4PM slot is usually open on a few days. The museum closes at 6PM.
The reason I'm asking for a connection while I am there is to give you a chance to back out if there's something there, but nothing you like. I'll be able to describe the item and the price and you can say yes or no.
Your existing eBay account should still be OK. You might want to log in to see if you can still do it.

Tentatively, I'm set to go in the middle of July. That can change, however. I'll PM or e-mail you when the schedule is firmed up.

I'll be traveling later than that, so there will be no need for your mobile. When the details are finalized, I send you the e-mail address of my cell.

I was at the ghibli museum a little over a month ago.
There were several Cels available.
If I remember correctly there was a discussion in the mailing list.
I mentioned:
There were several cels from the movies. They will cost you between 30,000 and 45,000yen each.
To which someone eventually clarified:
There are reproduction cels and hand painted cels.
The reproduction cels are printed using silk screening technique, and are mounted over archive quality inkjet matching backgrounds. The silk screened cels, named 'Art Cels', normally run in editions of 300, while editions of 100 or 150 for 'Hand painted cels'. Jhe Hand Painted cels also are made with a different palette than the original production cels. I'm guessing it's to avoid people selling them as original productions cels, which may have sold for 3x to 4x the museum price. The more popular movies have both types of reproductions, and have up to 7 or 8 different scenes in a series, while the rest of the movies have 3 or fewer. As can be expected, the 'Hand Painted' ones sell out quickly, even at $450. The museum doesn't sell actual production cels.
____________
As far as I can remember, the only cels available at the time were Porco Rosso ones and... I think... Laputa or Spirited Away ones.
My favourite was a hand painted 45,000yen cel of the scene where Porco Rosso meets Curtis in the bar. Porco on the right, Curtis on the left looking at each other. Very beautiful.

I checked my paypal account. It seems to be working.
JRR, when you say : "The more popular movies have both types of reproductions, and have up to 7 or 8 different scenes in a series, while the rest of the movies have 3 or fewer", do you mean that these reproductions ares available almost always or does it mean that for a popular movie, once the 7 to 8 scenes have been reproduced and sold in editions of 300 then the offer is over ?
I saw some Porco Rosso cells on Ebay but, to be honest, they are not my first choice. Instead I would love to find one on Laputa or Spirited Away for instance.
