Rewatching Alias!
I just finished Merlin, and I hated the ending.

I recently watched Knowing, a pretty bad film starring Nicolas Cage as a crazy guy as per usual. It was kinda fun to laugh at, but not really worth your time.
A better film I saw the other day was JCVD, in which Jean-Claude Van Damme (as himself) is in a hostage situation. A bit hard to explain, but the fact that he's playing as himself is very important.

Lately seen:
Mary and Max
Departures
The Descendants
All of which were really good!
And Fen, the pacing in Lore is certainly slow I suppose but I feel that's simply because a lot of things go unsaid and there is therefore a lot of meaningful silences etc. Plus it's such a beautiful landscape I guess a lot of time dwells on that as well. I certainly never found myself bored or wishing the story line would hurry up at all though.

Just came back from watching Elysium. I'm a bit of a Matt Damon fangirl so yay~ but it was a fun summer movie, regardless of that.

It is that i always tend to love the movie styles of the Directors i like.
I am saying this because i watched Empire of the Sun today. After watching it , i thought it is indeed a reamarkable movie and then in the ending "Director: .... Speilberg ". And found he made movies on both japanese and german parties. german one is the schindler's list.watched that before. Another one of him is saving private ryan. watched this one too but found out he made it just now. What is MOST interesting is he was born in 1946!!!!!!!!
I have a watched quite a lot world war two movies from very different perspective. French,Romanian,Italian,British and many Americans and probably some others too. But i have not seen one from the Japanese and Neutral perspective.
I did this to maintain a very clear understanding of the situation.
However most of the movies wanted to somehow maintain its neutrality by showing that some japanese or germans had a heart otherwise they are ruthless killers.
So i do not find them greatly believable.
I truly am very confused about What actually happened.
And one of the most major problem is it seems the parties that were at war are now best friends. What i want to know if japanese were really ruthless or german were die hard anti-jew than why it vanished from their society. Or it hasn't? Another thing is did the people had absolutely no control over these things.Although it is 7 decades of
WW2 still it is a interest of me because WW3 is quite near. It will bring about the fall of western civilization.just within next 40-50 years maximum.Western Goverments are getting secretive about things is a very very big hint of the tension rising.
Kaze Tachinu will be my first one from japanese perspective. Hope it has some neutrality atleast.

It seems to me that losing a total war has a very strong impact on almost any society. Japan and Germany were basically burned to the ground and built up again, almost from scratch. Germany in particular was cut in half and then stitched back together after decades. And Japan was occupied by the US and reshaped with a new constitution.
Of course the resulting societies would be very, very different than the ones that started WW2. Especially when the new generations are raised believing that what the ones before them did was wrong. Moreso when it's forcibly stamped out by the government.
If you want to learn what happened during WW2, I highly do not recommend movies. Documentaries are good, historical dramatizations are OK, but most normal movies have a tendency to be way way off, because they're made to be appealing to an audience and not to be historically accurate. U-571 and Enemy at the Gates are perfect examples of why not to get history lessons from Hollywood.
@Fen -- I saw Matt Damon on the Colbert Report tonight... attempting to rescue Colbert from being trapped underneath a vending machine while talking about Elysium. It was... well, it was something.

Your point is acceptable.
The reason i do not watch historical documentaries or read historical books is they are boring. Movies are more fun to watch. I thought watching it from different perspective will allow me to have a neutral view. although it was until now , WW2 is not the same case.

Saw "Smurfs2" today, a live action/CGI movie. It was alright, funny and tearful (remember, my kids say I have soggy eyeballs) at times, but overall good IMO. Out of a rating of 5, I'd give it a 3 to 3-1/2...
In about a half hour, I'm going to see "Planes"... I'll let you know what I think of it when I return.
======================================
OK, saw "Planes", total CGI along the lines of "Cars". IMO, not Quite as good as Cars, yes it had some surprising moments, but maybe I was spoiled by Cars and it just seem as good, plot wise.
I will probably get the DVD when it comes out for the grandkiddies, mainly.
I will say this about it, the audience cheered and clapped at the end.

Because it's got what moviegoers crave! It's got electrolytes. XD
I watched Scott Pilgrim vs. the World the other day. I thought it was fun, and I liked the casting. But what's-her-name female love interest was way too passive to be interesting.

If you enjoyed the film you should check out the comics! It takes place over six volumes so there's much more time for character development and it makes it more interesting.
So last night I finally saw Porco Rosso! Some of the other students in the dorms decided to watch a Ghibli movie, and by the time I turned up they'd already chosen Porco, which I was very happy with. I enjoyed it a lot, though as it's quite different, it's hard to say how it compares with other Miyazaki works...

I had to shake my head in pity at you over that. I really do pity you. Not only because you are missing out on some superb experiences in front of a TV screen or between the pages of wonderful books (yes, that word describes non-fiction too) but because you cannnot get an objective view of any historical subject from a war movie, as Mush points out.
Some of the finest British television ever made are our documentaries, especially on science, art, history, religion and related factual subjects. If you can find a copy on DVD of the British documentary series "The World at War" which covers the entire story of WW2 in (IIRC) 24 x 1 hour episodes that would be a good start. Even that is a little jingoistic. It was made in the 1970s and in terms of range of coverage hasn't been surpassed.
If factual TV documentaries bore you then try some good history books, there's so many to choose from. A good and thought provoking book on how the western allies view the war which was essentially won by Soviet Russia is Norman Davies "Europe at War, 1939-1945, No Simple Victory" (Macmillan Books ISBN 0-333-69285-3). It does not discuss the Pacific War between Japan and America and the Allies but focuses on Europe and Russia. Its extremely readable and for a factual book brought out strong emotional reactions in me. It certainly places the horrors of Stalin's regime in context against Hitler's and th efacts are disturbing to say the least.

Yeah! I've picked up the first three and I already like them better than the movie (although the movie definitely had its charms). Scott is a stronger, more self-willed character in the comics, which is a good thing. I'm looking forward to the rest of it!

*chokes*. Wait, you mean, you hadn't seen it until now?
Saddles -- I'll have to keep an eye out for that book once I have more reading time. It sounds fascinating!
This reminds me of an exercise done in one of my university history classes... The prof asked the class to put up their hands if they thought the war began in 1935. Nobody raised their hand. Then suggested 1937, at which a large number of students in the class raised their hands. I was unimpressed at how poorly they must have learned history. Then he asked who thought it began in 1939, and about half (only half!) of the hands went up. Then he asked 1941, and the rest of the class raised their hands, while I sat there in disbelief.
It turned out that those who said 1937 were Chinese students, and for them the war began with the Japanese invasion of China. For commonwealth students and most Europeans, it began in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. For the Americans, it began in 1941 with Pearl Harbour. It just goes to show how differently coloured peoples' perceptions of the same war can be...
BTW, Saviour -- Grave of the Fireflies is an interesting perspective too, if you're up for it.

Haha yeah, Porco Rosso is one of the very few I'd never got around to seeing. Now I think the only feature-length Ghiblis I haven't seen are Kaze Tachinu (I haven't decided whether I want to go and see this when I won't understand the dialogue...), Ocean Waves and Ponyo.
I'm glad you like the Scott Pilgrim comics, by the way! I also enjoy the film, but because of the short runtime - and also the fact that the final volume hadn't yet been published then - the focus is really on action and fun, with less time for the more serious aspects that come up in the books.

Arren, Ocean Waves is a really interesting movie. While its main characters are high school students they are unusually mature and somewhat manipulative people. Its a very different movie and I like it a lot. It sa romance and partly a coming-of-age story but with some fresh twists. Definitely recommended. I think it ranks in my top 3 to 5 Ghiblis.

I agree, its a great ending and I like how it mirrors the beginning, it makes the two scenes like a pair of bookends.

Ocean Waves now holds a particularly special place in my heart for being set in Kochi City - I have actually been inside the train station where the movie starts and ends!
And Arren, you should go see Kaze Tachinu! My Japanese is definitely not great, but I still felt like I got a lot out of it. You'll miss some details, but the big picture is pretty easy to grasp.
