I think this is out in the UK today! I'll try to see it some time soon. I hear it went over pretty well in Japan.
Also, I see this Ghibli podcast had an interview with Shinkai: https://twitter.com/ghibliotheque/status/1646875513053380610
I haven't listened to it but apparently they discuss Whisper of the Heart at some point!

Last night I went to the cinema to see this!
I really enjoyed it. There are some similarities to his previous two films, but I definitely appreciated the aspects that were different. I found the pacing very good and I thought the road trip side of it was really fun. Overall I'm very happy I made a point of seeing it in the cinema!

I watched this a week ago at the cinema with my daughter. It was the Japanese audio with subtitles (I am not sure an English - I mean American dub has been done yet).
Like Shinkai's recent films it was an explosive visual feast and almost too pretty to look at. The CGI I felt was much more obvious in this film that his other recent work and in a few places it jarred as being too obvious.
I have the impression from this that one of Shinkai's sponsors is now the Japanese Tourist Board because the story flew all over the country at a breakneck pace and seemed to highlight almost everything beautiful and wondrous about Japan's countryside, mountains, historic places and cities. Maybe I'm overthinking this but the impression was certainly there.
It was ... a fantastic story, and by that I mean fantastic in both meanings - massively impressive but also based in fantasy set against the real world. I was reminded of "Weathering with You" in that Japan's mythology is wound into our modern world but that is not at all a bad thing as the connection is well made and the storyline made a great deal of sense.
There were lots of Easter eggs for fans of both Shinkai and other anime directors with nods to Miyazaki (music from Kiki's Delivery Service) and possibly Gainax and Hideaki Anno with music from Kare Kano. I saw a reference to "Agartha" and probably missed others. Something for the fans to pick apart.
There was a very strong storyline link to the tsunami of 2011 which I think was handled beautifully and with good effect into the main character's story.
The main male lead was also really nicely designed and animated and I'd have liked to see more of him though he spent 90% of the film's story in an different guise which was frustrating as he was really nice to look at.
There might be things to say where the story was weak and I felt the action was so rushed and so hectic that I didn't have time to relax and enjoy the whole experience. Perhaps that's intentional so that the viewer watches it again. It is very much a story, like "Your Name" that will reward a second or even multiple viewings.
I cant help thinking though that something was not quite right and perhaps the pacing was the issue.
Even so, highly recommended and as before Radwimps music was perfect for it.

Have to say Shinkai is doing hits after hits.
I think we had a old previous discussion asking who is going to be the next torch bearer of Japanes Anime Movies.
Seems like that is Mokoto Shinkai by a huge margin.
Also he has picked up his style of work very early on. From his first movie until his last all of them have similar themes and ideas in different stories. Similar to Miyazaki and Takahata.

its a uniquely Miyazaki film, one only he could make and its uniqueness places it beyond being easily critiqued.[About Porco Rosso] taken from a quote of Saddletank and Orphic Okapi
