I really like the Japanese lyrics, probably because I can't identify with the original John Denver english lyrics at all (West Virginia...Mountain Momma...)

Know what you mean. Country Road was one of the songs I could never listen to...the sound, the lyrics, it just didn't appeal to me so I was quite surprised when I found myself considerably liking the japanese version.

I really liked the John Denver version...
Anyway, thanks for the lyrics! Now I can sing to myself properly.

John Denvers original is a really lovely song. It's both happy and sad at the same time. Depending on what mood I'm in when I hear it, it can either really lift me up or I have to stop listening, it makes me so blue.
Personally I like Shizuku's version from the dub best. The words really suit a struggling teenage girl's mind I think, its just the sort of thing a person of that age in those circumstances would write (WotH is one of the few animes I can watch in either Japanese or English, I like them both, especially the English VAs for Nishi and Shizuku's father).

Im not a fan of the released single version of country road by John Denver but i have the John Denver Rocky Mountain collection which has a more accoustic version of country road which is brilliant. Well in my opinion anyway

I prefer Country Road sung by Olivia Newton-John to John Denver. We can hear Olivia's singing at the opening of Mimi wo Sumaseba. I've loved and heard it before the movie was released. Japanese Wikipedia says that Olivia's Country Road was released only in Japan in 1976. Is that right?? Anyone knows it?

Well, I think the opening lyrics are wonderful in the original: "Country Road....take me home....to the place...where I belong..", it's just the parts I mentioned above (west virginia) make me feel so detached from the song, that I find it hard to identify with it.

I know what you mean, Saddletank. A lot of John Denver songs are like that; it's why I like them so much. And I like the way Shizuku plays with the rhythm a bit in the dub, it's an unusual take on the song that adds a lot of flavour.
I didn't really like the Olivia Newton-John version. It sounded too western-y and countryish.
Theowne - I know what you mean; I don't live in West Virginia either, so sometimes it is hard to identify with it. John Denver loved the mountains, and most of his best songs were about mountains, or the feeling you get when you're in the mountains. What I find is that I can identify with the feeling of homesickness someone might have for their home in West Virginia, even though my home isn't there... I don't know if that makes sense.

Sure, it makes a lot of sense. And for the most part, that feeling of home sickness, a sense of yearning, is what I like about the opening lyrics...."the place where I belong", etc. I suppose it's just that the parts I mentioned above created a barrier, because it then establishes that he's yearning for something specific that I've never even slightly known or experienced and won't ever be a part of, if you know what I mean. Kind of like, as I hear the first few lines, I get a bunch of images in my mind, but then when it goes on I realize that it's about something completely different.
I know it's odd to feel detached to a song just because of a few words, but hey, it's a weird world. And I'm an odd person . I suppose this is why I like Shizuku's version in "Mimi" so much.

I think we had a thread on this a while back. I know that somewhere I have read (and then posted here) that in Japan the ONJ version of "Take me Home" was very popular, more so than the John Denver version which was why Ghibli used that in the intro rather than the original - it was so well known and helped Japanese audiences connect to the story more readily.
There's the well-known "concrete roads" lyric of course, typical Miyazaki/Ghibli environmental comment but for me what makes the opening rendition of the song so poignant is it plays over a background of a Tokyo suburb at night with trains, traffic, buildings, steel, concrete and people all rushing about - in one sense it's nothing to do with country roads but later in the movie when we get into Shizuku's story (and especially are treated to the lovely almost private view of her family and their home and their lives) we realise that for people like this, these are their country roads and they are making the best of their lives that they can in this kind of place - another reason why Shizuku's journey affects me so much.

While I cannot answer Kanta's question, Wikipedia is somewhat accurate in a sense despite what people say, so it's probably true.
Several purists look down on Olivia's version because they feel it doesn't capture the true essence of the original song. Supposedly, Denver's version reflects a somewhat melancholic look of life, where one has a feeling of homesickness. Olivia's version, being more upbeat, fails to capture that feeling, and thus is rendered into a mere country folk song with no merit.
Personally, I prefer Olivia's version precisely because it's more positive, and it doesn't help that it's more catchy.

It's not more catchy...
I don't believe that a remake should necessarily capture the same essence as the original song. If it does, what's the point of it? It's absolutely up to an artist to take the song in their own direction; many times songs can be made much better that way. Like, I don't know... anything by Joni Mitchell. She writes brilliant songs, but I can't stand her singing...

The essence is the soul, unless changing it was a deliberate act. You have to remember that for these people, it's not just music, it's art, or something sacred in a manner of speaking.
