she doesnt do a particularly good job in this case i'm afraid, i think the best choice for Earthsea dubbing was Dalton.. he suited the chrarcter the most without being to... obvious..

Ah, well . . . At least she's open-minded about the sort of projects she takes on. I don't envy any actor who has the task of dubbing a film.

thats true, and when a well known actor establishes themselves in a particular role it is near impossible to shed an audiences association between the character and the actor, as such, Hagirtay's voice alone will most likely be forever linked with the unmistable "Bum Bum" of the L&O opening theme.. unfortunately this ruined her role in Earthsea for me.

This is the first Ghibli production I saw. I liked it, espcially enjoyed the presentation of the characters, esp Sophie and little boy, Markl and the fire, Calsifier.
However, I found a lot of loose ends and got confused here and there.
After finding out that it was based on a book by Diana Wynne Jones I went to search high and low and finally bought it. I thought it could help me answer some questions I had about the storyline. However, I was suprised that the movie has a rather different storyline altogether that only shares two similarities that I can immediately think of - the aging of Sophie & the contract Calsifier has with Howl.
Then, I went and bought the sequel book which Dianna Wynne Jones wrote too!
Anyway, the wikipedia entry for this animation is also quite extensive if you've not read it (or maybe some of you wrote it! ;p) . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howl

Sorry, i should have been more clear as the "sequel" (Castle in the Air, no affliation to the animation Castle in the Sky) is quite a loose one that only has Sophie and Howl in it but not as the main characters. There's more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_in_the_Air
Personally I enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle book and animation a lot more and there might not be a point in reading Castle in the Air really.

This thread seems to have gone a little off topic. Just thought I'd share my opinion on the movie and maybe redrive the thread to discussing the movie.
In general, I think the movie is quite good. Not one of my favourites, though. Its main defect may be that the storyline changes suddenly throughout the movie, which confuse the viewers.
Warning: Spoilers
After the first 10 minutes, the plot seems clear: Sophie has been cursed by the Witch of the Waste and has to find a way to break the curse and recover back her youth. But, oh wait, this is true only during the first half of the movie. During the meeting between Sophie and Suliman, the one we thought was the main evil character (the Witch of the Waste) is reduced to a harmless old woman and, at the same time, an ongoing war becomes the central plot. Then again, only near the end, we learn that Howl and Calcifer are linked and that giving Howl back his heart is the key to solve all problems (including the war).
In the middle of this, Sophie's curse is apparently forgotten. Then we realize that the curse is being slowly broken as the passion for Howl grows in her. But there is no mention of this and Sophie seems unaware of it. In fact, it is probable that everyone realized it at a different point in the movie.
Compare this with the simple plot of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. No wonder people needs 2 or 3 views just to know what's going on!
And still a big question remains: after a big fall that Sophie survives without a scratch (amazing, even for an anime character), she finds the castle's portal that leads her just to the right place and time where everything is explained and all problems solved. Is it just a big coincidence that the portal gets locked on that position after the fall? (If anyone knows the answer to this, please respond).
In spite of this, the movie has great visuals, animation, characters and some humour which makes me consider it as a good movie.

i have been going on about the sequel forever and only now do people realise it? XD
ah, thats hilarious.
i think that the portal was locked like that cos at that moment howl and calcifer were "killed" and howl probably realised this and used his magic to lock it cos he knew sophie could help

I love this movie. On another forum my icon and sig is of calcifer. I'm telling you, Calcifer owns souls. And Howl is, how I put it, delightfully emo. My friend thinks he's a stoner, though. XD

He's not really, but I like to say that, mostly 'cause he has scissors over his bed and puts his hands on his hips.

Yeay... Im the 1st post in months! Heeh..
Okay! Howl's was the very first Ghibli movie I ever saw, ever. (Okay, that's not really the truth... When I was little, in 2nd or 3rd grade we watched Castle in the Sky. The only part I remembered was that opening scene where Sheeta floats down from the sky... And then I watched it again when I first got into Ghibli and was like, OMG!!! I've seen this before!!! It was a strange feeling, because 2nd grade was a long time ago... Oh, and when Cartoon Network had their month of Miyazaki, I caught the beginning of Nausicaa. I didnt get the title of it, so for months I kept asking my friends, 'do you know of a movie with a girl, and she had orangey hair and wore blue and had a fox kind of animal, and she rode on a glider? aagh I cant remember the title!!') Yeah... so.... back to Howl...
I watched it first at my schools anime club. It went overtime, because the DVD was scratched and kept freezing up, but anyway... When it finished and the principal turned the lights on (she was the head of the club), I just sat there in a daze. My friend was like, 'that was good, wasnt it?' and all I could do was go 'uh-huh'. 'Come on, we're leaving now. Hurry up!' 'Uh-huh...' and all i could think was 'Wooowww.... that was beautiful.... Just beautiful....' The whole time I was watching it, i got so wrapped up in the story that i cried. Yup! Cried my head off. During the flower garden scene and the scene where Sophie thinks she killed howl... Heeh... I feel really foolish now, in retrospect... And lots of people stared at me like I was a lunatic. Especially the librarian. (She had to be there cause she was the media specialist. I'm emotionless at school, and people who dont know me are always telling me to talk, smile, laugh, cry, say something!! But my friends know that once I get talking about a topic i like, I dont shut up.) Back to Howls again..... But as I walked out the door (my friend had to hit me on the head to get me out of the daze i was in), I realized... 'Woww, it was beautiful and all, but what was the plot? I cant remember anything at all!' I was just sitting there, not thinking, just letting the images wash over me... It didnt help that some of the people kept talking the whole time, and I couldnt hear the dialouge. Especially when Turniphead showed up. A lot of the people got up and started jumping around the room with their arms spread out, then. Also, i couldnt hear anything at the scene where Howl freaks out about his hair... The room was mostly full of girls, with only about 4 or 5 boys, so understandably... Yeah. And when howls room showed up everyone was like, aaahhh! i want that room! Its so cool! Look stuffed animals! haha, cute!! ........ Yeah. Annoying. So I went home and watched it again in youtube about 5 times. Then I watched Spirited Away about 10 times. Then I watched almost all of Ghiblis films in quick succession after that, and have been a ghibli fan ever since.
