Hiya Juliet, welcome!
Just like you I am an avid Ghibli fan that enjoy Miyazaki (宮崎駿) works a lot. Mononoke (もののけ姫/幽灵公主) also have left a very strong impression on me. Every single Miyazaki film is immensely powerful terms of conveying its emotions and ideas, and Mononoke is no exception.
And yea, Joe Hisashi's (久石譲) scores are inseparable parts of any Miyazaki film. No matter as devices for enhancing the viewing experience, or as musical art, they are highly impressive.
P.S. Since this is an English-based forum, it would be a good idea to post all your messages in English, as very few of us can read Chinese. Thanks .

Totoro. Charming, impossible to believe it co-premeired with Grave. Happiest movie, and saddest movies of all time...

My favorites would be My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. They are both very heartwarming and charming films. I also love the characters and the music. Especially the opening and ending songs in both Totoro and Kiki.- Soaring and I'm Gonna Fly and for Totoro-Sampo and Tonari no Totoro. (I've only seen the English version for Kiki though...)
Jiji, when you translated that Chinese book, it said Totoro was based on Miyazaki's mother's illness. I guess since he created that out of his own experience, after reading that bit of the book, it makes me appreciate Totoro even more.
That's just my opinion.

I'd really like to know more about the plot.
According to the following site, the movie is the edited digest of "The End of Industria (ep 24)", "Giganto (ep 25)" and "Finale (26)". And by the way, there is also a fake sequel produced in early 90s with no connection with the original story.

It is not that easy to give you a concise and accurate summary so I will leave it for now. But I suggest you to read Alexander Hill Key's "The Incedible Tide," which is believed to be where Miyazaki gained his inspiration of Conan from. When you have a chance, do spend some time to watch the series. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

Additional note: Conan is unlicensed in the English world. You may be able to get the fansubs from the P2P networks.

I think Miyazaki's mother's illness had profound impact and influence on the Director's works, especially the more personal ones like Totoro. The book also suggests the existence of intimate connections between his childhood and Totoro. Still I cannot say for certain that Totoro is based on Miyazaki's own expereince. I am more inclined to think that the effect of his mother's illness on Totoro is similar to the effect of "The Incredible Tide" on Conan - an inspiration to Miyazaki to make his own unique works which are with more personalized characters and plots.

Grave of the Fireflies. I found it in a department store and purchased it because it's Ghibli. I love it. Very well done and pretty risky to make a movie about Hiroshima when the country is still feeling it's effects. Thumbs up to Miyazaki-sama!!

I have not yet seen many Studio Ghibli films as I only became aware after Spirited Away but of the one's I have seen from the 80's I would Say Nausicaa is the best although it did remind me of the Holywood film Dune. (I'm not sure which came first.)
I am yet to see GotF but from what I've heard I think that will then be a very strong contender for my fav 80's film.
Excluding the last two releases which I found completely enthralling (SA & HMC) I think Pom Poko is the best Ghibli film as to me it was completely origional, funny, beautiful and had an underlying message (we are killing our world quicker than we realise) which seems to be one of the trends throughout SG's productions. Pom Poko also has a very good social commentry on how we are all loosing / ignoring our mythical heritage.

Well i voted for laputa and then was most distressed to see how so many others thought it underdeveloped in terms of charactor. though pazu was a bit of a predictible holwood sort of guy i could still really imagine him as a real lil' dude (noble, hard workin and gallent - a diomand in the ruff - hee hee mining punn) and i found him so admirable, its true though that sheeta was a bit bland (yet i didnt think of this before it was mentioned), but i maintian that it is my best one of the 80's simply becouse it is so beuatifull in its backgrounds and scenery and the overgrown ruined castle floating in the sky sparked my imagination no end. also the robots i thought where pretty complex - desighned to do the biddingg of there war mongering masters they, when left to their own devises where so gentle and nurtchering. a great and wonderfull adventure with so many brilliant twists and turns - love how the pirates become the enemy and then the allies of our protagonists.
thouggh yes the bad guy was, well just too much of a bad guy - really 2D - he definatly could of done with more depth - unless you use your imagination and imagine some tortured back story.
im surprised at how many people NEARLY cryed during grave of the fire flys - i wept a number of times. i think it was the saddest movie iv ever seen let alone cartoon.
sorry getting a bit long winded and i think this thread seems to be out of date but i just had to put in my defence of the great castle in the sky.
pazus such a hero. and whats wrong with the occasional steriotypical charactor anyways? as long as it works for the movie - it needed him and his classic hollwood relentless heroism to save the day and the lovely sheeta.
peaces of 8 guys.
ps - am so glad to find all you obsesive ghibli buffs - i dont feel so alone now.
wev seen the light!

This poll is missing..."Meitantei Holmes Gekijouban", a 'compilation movie' of two Miyazaki-directed episodes of the Sherlock Hound series shown alongside Nausicaa in 1984 and released by Buena Vista Home Entertainment on DVD under the Studio Ghibli label(http://club.buenavista.jp/ghibli/product/index.jsp?cid=248).
You can download the DVD trailer here: http://www.buta-connection.net/download/videos_holmes.php
