Laputa. It's my favorite one of those 80's films. It's also my second favorite Ghibli film, if that puts it into perspective.

I chose Nausicaa because of all the films I've seen on the list it is the most spectacular. I love the animation and story. Much like Mononoke the premise of man versus nature truly catches and draws me in to these films. Not that films like Laputa, Grave, and Totoro are amzaing, overall I would choose Nausicaa over the rest.

Naucicaa is the best from my point of view.

Complexity of the world, tale, and characters is what makes me think like that.
And Nausicaa itself is one of the cutest girls I have ever seen in animated movies.

For 80s, I would prefer Grave of Fireflies. Not because of Miyazaki or Takahata, but the nuance of the movie itself.

Laputa is great too, but I only love its final/ending scene.

I'm sorry, but I fell asleep when I watched Nausicaa.... but I love its monster design.

Totoro, fun.. and happy.. and because of that.. I don't like to rewind and play it again..

But Grave.. is totally sad! I almost cried! This is why I love to watch it many times... maybe because I'm a kind of "mono no aware" man.

The second best for me is Kiki, third is Laputa...

Though I love every single film listed up there (though I have yet to see The Yanagawa Canal Story), but I chose My Neighbor Totoro--it's brimming with Miyazaki's inexhaustible imagination, the characters are thoroughly believable and develop nicely through the course of the film, the family is actually loving and unified (in contrast to Hollywood films), and the mother's illness is treated as a fact-of-life instead of tragic doom (again unlike Hollywood films). The music is a joy to listen to, the animation is quite intricate and detailed for its time, and the Totoros are just so...CUTE! The only weakness in the entire film is the deus ex machina ending (you know, when Mei gets lost and the Nekobus helps Satsuki find her).

I love them all! I didn't see the Future Boy Conan one, though, but the rest are all good. I do like Laputa and Nausicaa, though. And Kiki.

It was a really tough choice for me, but for my favorite, I said Kiki's Delivery Service. The characters in that one are so realistic to me, and I just love everything about the movie.

Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were close seconds.

i probably should have voted after i've seen all the listed choices, but i thought Grave of the Fireflies was the best. it was really touching and almost put me into tears at the end... i had to see Kiki's Delivery Service to put me in a better mood after seeing it since it was so sad.

I'd say Gauche the Cellsit.

5 tar movie in and out. No, not a movie, its more of a work of art. Its so simple, yet intriguing and beautiful at the same time; and I absoluteley adore simple slice-of-life classic stuff like this.

As far as any Takahata/Miyazaki stuff goes, my favorite movies are Gauche, Totoro, and Porco. While my favorite show is 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. also, admirable and cheerful, Chie bring tears to my eyes. this is must film for the person who loves the cat of two foot walking.

Chie lived in Osaka.
In the daytime, She is the 5th grader in the elementary school.
In the night, She works alone instead of her father Tetsu, in the pub of roasted Horumon that has managed by her family. the cat lives together, his name is Kotetsu. the grandmother who is stronger than Tetsu and the grandfather who is timid has lived in neighborhood of Chie.

well, i do say nausicaa is my fave of the 80s, the great story line, the beautiful character/monster/setting design and the great animation, i do say this is one superb movie for the 80s standard, i watched it just a couple nights ago and i still cant stop thinking about it, pls people, if u havent seen it, u should

btw, for kiki, even though i have that dvd, i still havent watched it, it looks kinda childish to me, but wid all your great comments on this movie, i'll give it a shot ^.^

Btw, Laputa, yea, the storyline really grips me hard, but i stop watching halfway, the english dub is really the worse, i hate watching anime wid english dub, it just doesnt feel right, the emotions of the characters are totally gone, anime movie dvds nowadays should keep the original japanese dialog, its great voice acting is one of the best thing of anime

Laputa is a superb movie and should never be missed. I would recommend you to get the DVD which contains the original Japanese soundtrack.

I would have to go with "My Neighbor Totoro". That is what I gew up watching and knowing. Which soon sprouted to my love of all of Miyazaki's films (and Takahata). They are all good films, just Totoro was the best. But if you asked more recently... Iwould have to say Spirited Away. But that's irrelevent to the topic.

1. Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Why:

My first Ghibli Film. As well, the music consistently follows the same melody. However, the melody is played by different instruments and different rhythms each time, making the melody more unique.

As well, Laputa has a great and non-confusing storyline that pleases anyone who watches it.

2. Grave of the Fireflies

Why:

Very inspirational and touching film. It is very moving and can manipulate viewers' thoughts and provoke them to change their ways of life for better/good.

Extremely riveting and has the best voice-people for Seita and Setsuko. Setsuko, the four year old, is absolutely the most powerful symbol of tragedy in war; otherwise, the scenario of losing small and innocent children.

I think Kiki might have been the first I ever watched but it is still may favorate. I can't really put my finger on it and I don't think I could explain to anyone the plot and make it sound anything more than a cartoon for little girls. I think you just have to see it.

It hasto be Kiki's Delivery Service for me. Perhaps it's because this was my first Ghibli movie, but it's completely enchanting, very beautiful and still possesses perceivable depth. It is no great epic and you won't find much adventure there (giving it only more power when it finally comes), but that only makes its message more convincing. And it gives the intended audience some great insights about the life and some store of encouragement along their path to independence (how will the audience perceive that I cannot tell, though).

Grave of the Fireflies gets pretty close. Well - it's an incredibly strong movie (not sure if I ever saw any emotionally stronger movie, animated or not), and the message it gives is important. But for the very same reasons, it's really not a movie I want to get back to - I saw it once, was blown away and it might yet take some time before I will want to see it again - while I keep returning to Kiki. You might not agree that this argument matters that much and you are welcome to. I said it comes pretty close. ;-)

Nausicaa's somewhere behind at the third place (the ending would really have to be different for it to do better).

I'm afraid I'm with Konan on this one - Tonari no totoro! Even amongst the exceptionally high standards of Studio Ghibli, totoro is "even more perfect".

Above and beyond Miyazaki san's other works, totoro naver fails to provoke an emotional reaction from me. To quote Roger Ebert "Whenever I watch it, I smile, and smile, and smile."

The characters, especially those of Satsuki & Mei, feel completely real and endearing. The environments of their home, the tree, the school and the surrounding settlements feel real. The film feels like one gorgeous, long summers day.

I think the film is also perfectly scored, a quality I can only think applies to three other films at best outside of the SJ arena.

The animation may not be as proficient as that in Kiki's, the subject arguably not as worthy as Grave of the Fireflies and the initial impact not as weighty as Nausicaa would have been when it first came out - if I could only pick one, totoro is the one Studio Ghibli film I would want to see before I died.
