favourite Ghibli bad guys | |
I was thinking about Ghibli bad guys and how there are two kinds of them;the serious ones, who's motives you understand and who actually aren't bad and the comical bad guys, who always manage to fail at everything. Who are your favourite Ghibli baddies? For me, of the serious villains it's a close call between Kushana from Nausica and Lady Eboshi from Mononoke hime. Both are brave and independent women, who manage to survive in the world of men. They have good intentions, they want to help their people. It's their course of action to help their people that makes them problematic characters.
Of the humorous baddies my favourites are the Mama Aiuto gang from Porco rosso (sorry Dola gang, I DO love you, but not as much as Mama Aiuto). From the first scene with the Mama Aiuto gang, you instantly know that they will never be the feared sea pilots they attempt to be. It's the way all their plans fail epically that makes them so loveable. One of the scenes in Porco Rosso that always makes me laugh hysterically is when we first meet the Mama Aiuto gang, when they try to kidnap a bunch of little girls and the "hostages" compleatly overrun "the kidnappers". When Porco comes to save the little girls it's very open who needs saving and from whom (my guess is that the Mama Aiuto gang need to be saved from the little girls). Ok, they aren't very polite and they never wash, but come on, who doesn't love the Mama Aiuto gang?

Everyone knows this by now but... LADY EBOSHI is so freakin' cool!!! Haha! Kushana is cool too! Both have very similar attributes, but I will go with Eboshi for one reason, she never showed any weakness in the face of danger. Kushana did once, when she was in the sea of decay and the nest of Ohms came up from that lake to investigate the planes. Lady Eboshi was calm and collected even when she had her arms snatched away by that wolf head!
I have to agree with you Heidi, the Mama Aiuto gang had me laughing out loud every time. I really loved when the gang wants to take a pic with Fio and at the last second the boss smacks everyone else away so that its just him next to Fio! Hahahahahahaha!!!! Those guys are great!!! Dola is awesome, no doubt, but man Mama just had me in hysterics all the way through. A great piece of entertainment that movie is!

Kushana, after reading the manga, is defineatily my favourite. If she can even be considered a villain.
Eboshi ain't got nothing on the woman who personally trained 6,000 young men into Torumekia's finest, and whose family is a nest of vipers who would not once hesitate to eat their own flesh and blood.
The Mama Aiuto gang is always hilarious. I loved absolutely every scene with them.

It's hard to decide whether the Dola gang are good or bad. i suppose their actions are bad but they are friendly
Dola is probably one of my favorite characters from all the Ghibli films, she is amazing and hilarious. ("AND CALL ME CAPTAIN" -- "Yes mom!"
Dola <3 x

I'd say the Dola Gang counts mostly as good guys. They formed an alliance with Patsu and Sheeta near the end, remember? And they didn't have any bad intentions, despite wanting the treasure all for themselves.
Muska is the real villain. And a good one, too. Mark Hamill is always a plus.

I meant bad guys in a kind of ironic way. I don't see most of the bad guys as bad either, they're just ahem... morally ambivalent...

Yeah. Like in Fujimoto's case, he was actually trying to prevent a disaster from happening by letting Ponyo loose into the human world. He's just over-protective.

Typical of a parent though, I think in most cases in the ghibli films is the bad guys are made so you grow to like them. Which is good because everyone must understand that in life there are people credited as being bad and good, but really they were doing what they believed was right.
And nobody cant say that they didn't believe once when they were naughty that they were doing what they believed was right, in some cases that can mean influence though... in alot of uber bad guy's cases, i wont state names though as it may offend some.
