Laputa original 1986 English dub on DVD / video?Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by super*frankie Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Hello,

My old video tape of the original 1986 English dub of Laputa has finally worn out, I've been trying desperately to find a copy on DVD or video but with no luck - all I can find is the recent Disney dub which I think is absolutely apalling. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the original 1986 version, my heart will break if I can't find it, it's my favourite film ever and the Disney version ruins it for me

Thank you!

Hi,

Disney usually do a pretty good job on the dubs, but in this case I agree with you...for Laputa they did an appalling job. The main problem being that James Van Der Beek's voice sounds so deep its just disturbing.

Well anyway, I think the Japanese DVD [2002] would be perfect for you. It contains the Japanese audio (with English Subs) and the original English dub.

Happy hunting

Goodness, glad i'm not the only one that thought this. It's one of the worst Ghibli subs IMO, and James van der Beek's nasally voice drove me crazy. I actually wasn't that enamored of Anna Paquin's voice either.

Although I have to say, the original voice of Pazu sounded like a child's voice, making it alittle strange too.

That dub was really bad. But why do you not like the original Pazu voice? Isn't he supposed to sound like a young boy? ...he was played by a female voice actress, though. lol ^_^

Good luck finding the Japanese DVD. I guess the matter of you finding it depends on where you live and on your ebay luck.

Hey,

the normal dvd's that you buy in HMV, Amazon etc have both the English dub and the orginal dub, they often default to the English version though you can change this on the dvd menu

http://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/B000CBEWY...0243712-9074339

I hope this helps

Dude, there's another dub? He he he..
My mom is gonna go crazy. I spent, I
dunno, 700$ Canadian dollars on anime
already in the last year.(WAIT, WHERE IN
THE WORLD WOULD I BE ABLE TO GET THAT
MUCH MONEY?!)Hey, wait, that would only
be on my Ghibli films, not my Fruits Basket
or FMA DVD's. Whoa.
If you had trouble and lived in my area, I'd
be glad to help. I'm also the only one with
an old Kiki vhs and my cuz is the only one with
the old totoro dub.
But, I wouldn't really have known of this first dub
since that would have been eight years before
I was born.

Not particularly on-topic but not far off either, can anyone tell me how old Sheeta and Pazu are in the movie?

Pazu looks about 13 when we first see him but later (when piloting the glider through the clouds for example) his determination makes his face seem about 15.

Sheeta I'd put at about 15 or even 16 simply because of the bosom Miyazaki has given her, but I guess she could be as young as 14.

Anyone know for sure?

I'm not absolutely certain Saddles, but when a Ghibli character's age isn't given, it's often safe to assume that they are about 14. For Laputa, that's definitely what I would guess.

Laputa is like a film adaptation of Miyazaki's earlier Future Boy Conan series, which features the prototypes of Sheeta and Pazu.

Lana and Conan were both 11 years old, but they look younger...so I'd say 13-15 is a good guess.

Well, Sheeta doesn't look much older than Shizuku, so you're
right. I'd have something to comment about the age thing,
but it's a little embarrassing. Something Saddle said about
how Sheeta looks. Well..I'm not really flat chested and my
mom and aunt are, so..um..Okay, too embarrassing to add
what else without..Okay, I'm going to shut up before I
do something I might regret.

Uh..I'm not gonna go any further. That sort of stuff embarrasses me..
I'm just saying that I'm not flat chested and am
turning 13. So from my view Sheeta does only look
a couple years older than me. Or even a year apart.

Oh sorry, I understand now.

...Anyway, it is a little pointless trying to guess the age of a cartoon character with little to go on but physical appearance. Sometimes its difficult enough in real life, let alone animation.

Well I remember reading an interview which mentioned the two leads as being "preteens". So I'd guess their ages are closer to around 13 then 15 or 16.

Maybe the R2 DVDs has a special interview or something? Anyway, unless there was an official statement that even hints at the age, there's really no way to tell.

And no, in anime, you can never be able to judge their age by appearence. And I know that by experience.

Disney never dubbed "Castle of Cagliostro", but you can find two different English versions.

Streamline version - Some people like this version because they grew up with it, but most agree that its pretty bad. Lupin is called "Wolf" for some strange reason and in some areas, the translation is completely off. This dub was also featured on the recent Optimum DVD and I'm guessing this is the version you heard.

Manga Entertainment version - This is the newer dub and in my opinion, a very solid effort. The special edition Lupin DVD has this one in 5.1 and it sounds great.
