Personally, I stumbled upon the forum accidentally. I stayed for the close-knit community and the positivity, personally.

Thanks for the reply!
One person filled out the survey (it may have been you??) and their responses were genuinely interesting - and I'd love to chat with that person a bit more! (so if it was you, or you read this - please message me/reply I'd love to talk - just about anything and everything, as I enjoy getting to know people)
Also after coming here I've been motivated to watch some Ghibli - I've always wanted to but never got round to it. My friend from home loves Howl's Moving Castle and has always recommended it to me - is it any good? I've seen 5cm Per Second (I know it's not Ghibli) and thoroughly enjoyed that if it helps.

I was reading up on Ghibli and discovered that an Earthsea adaptation was in the works (I didn't know at that time that it would be one of Ghibli's weaker films). As I was looking for fansites to get more information, I found the Tavern, and since I was pretty into online forums at the time, I joined.
It may not be as active as it once was, but it still turned out to last better than other forums I used, so I'm still here now!
As for recommendations, HMC is probably a decent starting point. If you like 5cm/s then maybe you'd enjoy the less fantastical films though, like Only Yesterday or The Wind Rises.

i am active in lots of forums. Most of them are related to science and technology.
Ghibli is the only non-science forum i am active in.
As to answer your questions, i came across tavern after i saw spirited away. although i was accustomed to anime, i never imagined that i dont know about such a great anime. then to my surprise i found the studio ghibli. Due to bad communication skill from studio ghibli stuff which is true to this day, i could not find any information about studio ghibli fans.
after much effort i came across nausicaa.net and onlineghibli.com which had quite a bit information about a lot of things. But i think the primary reason why i joined tavern was to know about the feelings of fellow ghibli fans about certain questions.
In my humble opinion i think that is the most important factor most join a forum.
However i stayed in the forum due to its uniqueness. It is completely different than any forum i ever come across.
NB: i looked at your survey, it was quite long. so sorry i could not answer the long questions there. i think this post answers many of those questions.
NB2: you had a interesting question, if it gave me anything special. answer is yes. We all live in a different country with different culture and customs. From this forum i learned how to be tolerant. this is absolutely impossible offline(meaning in my real-life) because of the confirmation bias and also because you can not find this diversity in most of the communities around the world.

its a uniquely Miyazaki film, one only he could make and its uniqueness places it beyond being easily critiqued.[About Porco Rosso] taken from a quote of Saddletank and Orphic Okapi
