Yeah I watched it recently expecting a lot but was disappointed. I think it appeals to a certain kind of person. JRR loved it but he's into music.

It looks pretty but is just rather weird, very humorous too with some extreme violence and fighting in cartoon style.

Its certainly up in the top rankings of quality anime (artwork, plot, directing) but it just wasn't for me I guess.

Its difficult to say what its about without giving spoilers but essentially it's about a teenage boy who lives in a small town in a life that's going nowhere. A large factory dominates the town that is doing mysterious robotics developments. The boy has a rather tramp-like girl he knows on a casual basis but one day another girl rides into his life on a motor scooter and weilding a guitar and the story centres around the second girls interaction with the boy and the mysterious robotics factory.

I suppose if you had to pigeon-hole it, it would be "comedy-sci-fi-relationship-romance".

It's shonen anime I think - aimed at boys and young men.

It's certainly worth watching.

That is like so wrong. But can't blame you, that's what it looks like anyway.

To be more precise, FLCL is imagination and emotions personified and amplified. It doesn't make sense most of the time because of that, because the viewers often only see the face value, and fail to see what the scene truly means.

For one, the battle scenes that plays out have a VERY significant meaning behind them. The battle themselves are not the point, but what causes them and what they represent.

Ah, well, you know me. I watch on one level, you often watch on another. But still, if you only percieve the story on the level I percieved it on I still think a viewer would enjoy it - it was just me that didn't due to the style.

Maybe you could talk us through the level on which you percieved it because I saw none of that (unlike, say Lain or Agent which I got into very early on and quite deeply too).

"Porco Rosso" is Miyazaki's most overlooked and underrated work, and in my opinion, it's his best film. That's just me, though, and I have unusual tastes.

Either way, it's worth checking out.

That's interesting. I wouldn't say it was underrated or overlooked at all. I think its deservedly up there among the top rank of his movies in the hearts of most fans. You'll usually find, among lists of people's top ten (or whatever) that Porco is in the upper half of most lists.

Yes, but I think you're missing my point. Most diehard Ghibli fans have seen Porco Rosso and love it, but no one else on the planet Earth has--unless you live in Japan. Tons of people around the world have seen Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, and a lot of people have seen My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa, and Kiki's Delivery Service. But usually the only people who have seen Porco Rosso are those really into Ghibli films. Even some casual Ghibli fans dismiss it because there aren't any weird creatures or parallel universes.

That's basically the point I was trying to make. Sorry if it got muddled in the way I worded my post.

I would say that the only Ghiblis well know across the world are Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle - after those in the west anyway, the world is largely ignorant about Miyazaki. Mononoke would come third (a long way down) but I'd suggest that after that is a huge gap in terms of what's known in your average Tesco or Walmart household.

In fact I'd even suggest that your average family has only heard of Spirited Away.

Woops . . . I forgot about Howl's Moving Castle. That should be in the "tons" category along with Spirited Away. And even though Princess Mononoke is a great deal less popular, it still got a theatrical release in the U.S., which is why I put it in the "tons" category.

As for Totoro, Kiki, and Castle in the Sky--I think all were bestsellers for a short time after their video release.

I think your assessment that "your average family has only heard of Spirited Away" is probably accurate, but even less popular Ghibli films don't go entirely unnoticed in the West.

Except Porco Rosso.

Strangely it was the first Ghibli I bought before I even knew Miyazaki existed, simply because it had WWI aeroplanes on the box art and I'm interested in WWI aviation.

But I can't imagine that would make it a best seller though.

But I judged a book by it's cover and I'm damn glad I did.
