I am not sure of the one in Full Metal Alchemist as I have not seen the anime. But for HP, the US version is called "sorcerer's stone," while the UK version is called "philosopher's stone." No idea why there are two versions of the same word, though...
Back to the anime, the local TV station in my city braodcasts it every sunday. I should probably squeeze some time out in the weekends.

I love Hagane! Its one of my all time favorites, its even more special because the manga has an almost completely diffrent story. I wish I could see the movie but I doubt it will be out in the US for a long time.

Well, Sorcerer and Philosopher aren't the same thing. Sorcerer basically means wizard, whilst Philosopher is a theorist such Aristotle or Plato. The most appropriate term to use is probably the 'Philosopher's Stone' because thats what it was called in the original legends.
Back in the 16th century, Alchemy wasn't considered magic, but a science. According to Plato's 'Theory of Forms' everything is actually one of the same...therefore base metal can be transformed into gold. The Philosopher's stone was seen as the key in carrying out this transformation -the whole part about eternal life came later on. Therefore those who searched for the stone weren't wizards or even believers in magic, but scientists [by 16th century standards].
'Sorcerer's Stone' is just American simplification.
