Walking along the corridor, I glanced at Chi and noticed she had turned to face the wall. I opened my mouth and was just about to break the silence when she vanished with a great deal of noise and suddenly I was pulled forward by the hand.

I looked down to see Chi grasping my hand. I went a bit red, and she let go and knelt down to pick something up. I looked away and put my hands in my pockets.

quote:
"Here's me thinking I'd make it through the day without falling over anything."
I chuckled weakly as she walked forward purposefully. Because she was so small I was able to catch up quite easily.

"Well, um, let's hope you don't fall over again!" Couldn't you have said that when it actually happened?

"Aaanyway, let's get going..."

We made our way silently to the train station, now with a bit more space between us. Why does it always end up being so awkward?

His reply to my unfortunate tumble was about as half-hearted as his smile, leaving me struggling to think of something to say. I didn't blame him for his awkwardness, he was a shy person after all, but it just made me feel more of an idiot. All that was asked was that I managed to remain upright in his company - and I couldn't even manage that. Whilst I silently berated myself we moved quickly down the street and arrived at the station without a word, let alone another brush of hands. I was so wrapped up in my own worrying that it wasn't until we were waiting for the train that I was reminded of something i'd forgotten.

Bloopbloopbloop. [Text Message Recieved]

"Chi-chan! The car's waiting for you, where are you? Are you okay?
Kahei."

Flipping open my phone and reading the message, I sighed. Of course, the car would've been sent to pick me up as usual, I was so worried and excited about going somewhere with Hibiki I straight out forgot all about it.

Bloopbloopbloop. [Text Message Recieved]

"Okay, i'm getting worried now. Where are you? You know you aren't meant to travel by yourself, not with all those crowds.
Kahei."

Stifling a growl of irritation, I quickly opened up an empty message and began typing a reply "Sorry Hibiki-kun, i'm just..."

Bloopbloopbloop. [Text Message Recieved]

"That's it, i'm coming to get you.
Kahei."

"Gah!" I yelped, tapping a message to send him as quickly as possible. It would not be good if onii-chan came looking for me. In fact, the embarassment that would ensue would be equal to about a million of my little stunts on the way here.

Bloop. [Text Message Sent]

"No. I'm fine. I'll be back later. Don't worry ^_^
Chi."

After making sure the message had properly sent I switched off my phone, grimacing at the thought of the lecture i'd get later. I never ignored Kahei. I never really had to before, usually I was happy to do as he said. With an apologetic smile I looked up at Hibiki, "Sorry! My older brother was having a tantrum.". Looking up at his face I felt another little flip in my stomach, a reminder that this would be worth the mother of all reprimands.

Our train had arrived by this point, wheezing to a stop beside us, and without a word we stepped on. However, we were hardly the sole occupants, with a daunting wave of students from nearby high schools following us onboard. To put it lightly, it was packed. Deep breath, Chi. Grabbing hold of Hibiki by the cuff of his jacket I pulled him after me through the carriage until I found a place where the crowd of chattering teenagers wasn't quite so thick. Looking around at how closely jammed the people were around me, the jolting off the train constantly sending them bumping into each other, I felt my heart beat race just a little faster, the smell of sweat and popular perfumes becoming thick and choking. I had ridden trains before, but rarely at peak times, and always surrounded by my father's employees. There had been one time, a few years ago, where i'd gone with just Kahei - that hadn't been so bad. But this sweltering hotpot of teenagers, their voices shrill with the excitement and relief of the end of another school day, was unprecendented for me. I realised I was still holding on to the cuff of Hibiki's jacket and I felt a flush of embarassment, but more than anything comfort at how close he was. "I'm not good with..." I mumbled, gesturing at those around us. I closed my eyes for a second, swallowing my rising nerves just as sensei had instructed me, knocking back the memories and fears that seemed to suddenly swamp my mind. By the time my eyes opened again I was far better, my panic receeded and my mind back on enjoying what I had looked forward to so much. I grinned up at Hibiki, leaning in slightly so he could hear me over the noise around us, "Do you have any brothers or sisters? You don't mention your family much.".

The train jarred and the large, teenage boy standing behind me with a group of his friends was sent into banging into me, before hurriedly apologising and moving away. The movement had moved me closer to Hibiki and without looking up to him, so he couldn't see the red in my cheeks, I slipped my hand from his jacket sleeve into his. I hoped he'd put my trembling down to the movement of the train. I'm glad you're here.

While we were waiting for the train, I heard a succession of "bloopbloopbloop" noises and looked to see Chi reading from her phone in a frantic sort of way. I politely stared across the tracks and gave brief acknowledgement when she spoke. It's none of my business...

Then the beeping and tapping stopped and I tore my gaze from the opposite platform.

quote:
"Sorry! My older brother was having a tantrum."
I nodded understandingly but said nothing. Still none of my business.

We hopped onto the train which, as I'd expected, was very busy. This carriage in particular was packed tightly. I was about to suggest getting off and back on at another carriage, or even waiting for the next train, when Chi grabbed hold of my jacket and pulled me along behind her. She didn't seem to have considered that with me being quite a bit taller, it was actually pretty uncomfortable. Aaaah, at least slow down a bit!

Once we were in a less restrictive carriage, she stopped and, after a period of silence, spoke quietly:

quote:
"I'm not good with..."
...crowds?

Yeah, I'd guessed as much. You're not exactly a people person yourself though!

She looked nervous for a moment, but seemed to overcome it.

quote:
"Do you have any brothers or sisters? You don't mention your family much."
Ah... family.

Your favourite people!

Right.

"Um, no. Just me... and my parents." At that point I was stuck, with no idea of what else to say, and not particularly wanting to say anything more on the subject at all. But I didn't need to add anything else as everybody was suddenly jolted forwards and I seized the nearest pole in order to keep myself steady. Chi was now standing a lot closer (aren't you lucky?) and holding my hand (mumblemumble).

After the sudden jump, the train was once again moving very smoothly, but my hand seemed to still be shaking. Is she okay...? I squeezed her hand and gave what I imagined was a comforting smile.

I didn't say anything as the train stopped once and moved on. The stops were close together and it was soon slowing down again.

"Okay, time to get off."

I can't believe I just said that...

I can't believe you just said that!

Embarassed, I deliberately looked away, and the train then came to a stop. As we stepped off, her hand slipped from mine. I instinctively reached over and held on again. "Are you feeling okay?"

I caught up with Icchan and the rest of the group. Kazuo had just arrived, and Mai was discussing something with Sadoru, who had his boots on already.

"Hi," I said plainly, as I opened my locker and put away my school books.

I felt like I'd have a hard time meeting Sadoru's eyes after lunch, so I kept my gaze down. Why didn't I just do it? I don't always have to act so weird and awkward. I'm sure he doesn't mind.

When a pause in the conversation arrived, I asked "So, what's the plan?"

It wasn't until after I had calmed down a bit that Hibiki's reply to my question about his family finally sunk in. It wasn't the words, they were fairly unremarkable - him being a single child and all, but the way he said it. He sounded so...reluctant. Probably exactly how I'd sound if asked about either of my parents.

"She's your daughter Tasumi, you can't ignore her forever."
"I can't...I can't look at her. Just keep the girl away from me, alright?"

No. I'm sure my reaction would not be so different to his.

I was distracted by my thoughts by the squeezing of my hand, the simple movement causing a fresh gush of happiness, as if my emotions could be controlled like an instant coffee machine. For happiness - press right hand. Hold for sustained pleasure. I smiled to myself, returning the gentle pressure and hiding the red of my cheeks beneath my too-large jacket sleeve. My nervousness about the train, about the noisy, crowded people around me - and of course, about being alone (properly alone) with Hibiki for the first time, was building up inside me. I could feel the pressure of it, like a pain in my gut, all my embarassment and blushes just fuel to the flames.

quote:
"Okay, time to get off."

Eruption.

Laughter burst from my lips, not any kind of laughter but big body-shaking giggles like small children tend to make, so loud that I knew I was drawing attention from those standing nearby but I couldn't help myself. My eyes grew bleary, joyful tears springing up, trickling down my cheek as I released Hibiki's hand in an attempt to suppress my boisterous chuckles but he reclaimed it before I could. I felt like something terrible I'd been waiting to happen had finally occured, an insane relief flooding throughout me, filling me with a calm I hadn't felt since before that kiss this morning. Perhaps it was simply the realisation that Hibiki was as nervous and bashful as I was, that I didn't need to feel awkward because I wasn't alone in this.

Luckily by the time we'd made it successfully off of the train, slipping through the push and shove of passengers boarding and those exiting, my laughter had softened to the odd giggle. Yet that feeling of untempered joy remained. No, joy is the wrong word, I felt more content then anything. Content to hold the hand of the boy I liked and worry no further about tripping or saying the wrong thing.

quote:
"Are you feeling okay?"

Looking up at him, I allowed my eyebrows to raise suggestively before giving his hand a firm squeeze "I am now.". Cue slow wink and mischevous grin. I looked away, allowing my sleazy-middle-aged-banker flirt to sink in before laughing and pulling him gently after me as we exited the train station and came out upon the street. "The phone shop and the cafe is this way I think,
(here I gestured to our left) only a few minutes walk." I chirped, studying the names of nearby shops and generally gaining my bearings. We walked along the pavement, in the direction I was quite sure was right, in a comfortable silence for a minute or so. A pair of school children on the road opposite to us caught my eye - two little girls in matching navy blue uniforms skipping and singing a popular tune. I recognised the expensive cut of their jackets, the golden bird sewn onto their breast pocket and nudged Hibiki, pointing over to them.

"I used to go to their elementary school! Fujikaru Girls." I said, my voice softening as I spoke of my old school. It was a private school, based not ten minutes from here, a combination of elementary and high school. I'd meant to be attending there this year, but well, things had changed. Looking up at Hibiki I smiled, I wouldn't have met you or any of the others if it'd ended up that way though. Silver linings eh?

"I am now."
She gave me a cheeky look that made me turn red (That seems to be happening an awful lot... maybe you should see a doctor. Well, you do that often enough already...), but when she looked away I stopped bothering to suppress a big smile. I allowed her to pull me along and, when she turned to speak to me again, I had rearranged my features into something more balanced.

She seemed to know where we were, so I walked alongside her quite happily, looking around at the area occasionally, but mostly at my feet. Following a nudge and a point, I looked across the street, where two schoolgirls were making their cheerful way along the pavement.

quote:
"I used to go to their elementary school! Fujikaru Girls."
I noticed that their uniforms looked pricey. "Looks pretty posh! The school I used to go to was a bit of a dump, really..." I said with a sigh, before hastily adding, "It was just the nearest elementary school to where we live." I didn't want her to think I was begrudging her for having attended what was probably an expensive private school.

I watched the two girls disappear round a corner. "Anyway, Isakaya's not too bad. There are worse places."

Out of the corner of my eye I saw that my comment had gone down well, Hibiki's cheeks turning delightfully rosy and a soppy smile pasted on his face. Like a kid in a chocolate factory. Nice going, Wonka. We walked in comfortable silence for a few minutes as I concentrated on getting a hold on where we were going, directions not being a particular talent of mine, and the idea of getting Hibiki lost on our first da- ...outing was a bit frightening.

quote:
"Looks pretty posh! The school I used to go to was a bit of a dump, really..."

he said with a sigh, noting the schoolgirls I had pointed out. Before quickly adding:
quote:
"It was just the nearest elementary school to where we live."

I raised an eyebrow, slightly confused at what had put him on edge. What eggshells is he trampling on now? Dismissing Hibiki's usual odd behaviour I gave what I considered to be a knowing smile, nod and looked away again. "I'm sure it wasn't as bad as you make out! Anyway, the school can be a bit of a dump but if the people in it are nice then it doesn't matter. The girls at Fujikaru were..."

"So I heard that it was all her fault that-"
"Shut up, she's coming!"

"Manic. A lot of them were more concerned about their manicures then getting good grades - which was espescially worrying considering we were still in elementary school." I finished, flashing him a smile and increasing my pace slightly as we neared the store and cafe I'd mentioned.

quote:
"Anyway, Isakaya's not too bad. There are worse places."

"Sure is!" I replied, "At least the people who go to Isakaya are uniquely dysfunctional." I winked and nodded to his single shadow, the true meaning of my words clearly implied. "Anyway! Phone first or hot chocolate?"

Na-chan's words resounded at the back of my head. It doesn't matter how liberal the school was, coming to the school at night was- is- not permitted. The timing is rather inconvenient, since by the time we're done with Karinushi, it ought to be quite late, assuming that not everyone lives near the school.

I caught the nod and the wink, and laughed softly. You can say that again.

For a moment, I glanced again at where the two girls had been, imagining how I'd have reacted had I spotted people from my elementary school. I doubted that I would recognise the uniform as it wasn't very distinctive, and I certainly hoped I wouldn't see anybody that had been there when I was. No, this wouldn't really be the best time for that.

quote:
"Anyway! Phone first or hot chocolate?"
My mind was still elsewhere, but I made it look like I was thinking of what to say.

"Ummm... Well, it's up to you. But then again, it would probably be best to get the phone sorted first. Once that's out of the way, there's no hurry after that, right?"

Feeling that I should be a bit less passive, I walked a bit faster, before halting. "Aaaand I don't know where I'm going. Maybe you should lead the way." Nice one.

It would be nice to delete the unrelated posts and leave the game as-is, uncluttered, in its unfinished form?
