here is a translation of long interview with Suzuki Toshio on Monthly Invitation(in Japan) May 2006.
http://rose-rote.hp.infoseek.co.jp/miya/...i-ino200605.htm
--When we made the Ghibli Museum, I recommended Goro as a curator. I didn't know whether he had the skill of construction though he was doing the work of landscape gardening till then.
-- I mentioned two candidates to whom Miya-san never did OK as a dummy. When the name of Goro was mentioned as the third idea, He was surprised.
--In this movie, I made the group at first as a working group. I thought that go ahead production of Ged-Senki by a young person. Young animators and staffs participated in the group including Goro. And, I heard their report after they had talked only by them. I've understood Goro is obviously taking leadership by the report. Moreover, he was drawing the picture there.
--I advised to him, "It's good that you see the story boards that your papa drew when you aren't understanding about the story boards. And you should see it fair in public." He faithfully executed that. He was correcting the connection etc. referring to the story boards of Miya-san that was by him, when the part that he assumed was completed, When I saw his story boards, I felt that this will be completed as a work that exceeds my imagination.
--This opinions of Anno Hideaki and Ootsuka Yasuo are guarantee for me. I was very glad. Indeed, Goro hasn't made a movie before. But, he has the ability. I deepened my confidence when I heard their opinions. "This goes well. "
-- it isn't strictly "Nausicaa". Mr.Miyazaki talked to me as Goro's father. He said, "You should refer to 'Shuna no Tabi'". Therefore, our picture are drawn partially referring to "Shuna no Tabi". Original story of this movie is "Tales from Earthsea", and graphics are "Shuna no Tabi". We are making this by such feeling. Mr.Miyazaki declared that Ged-Senki also influenced 'Shuna no Tabi'. Therefore, both roots are the same.
--I asked Goro for writing the lyrics of the song. He had never written lyrics. Therefore, I proposed to him that referring to poetry of "Kokoro" of Hagiwara Sakutarou. In the poetry of Sakutarou, that are "Kokoro woba nanini tatoen." Lyrics of the insertion song are "Kokoro wo nanini tatoeyou." When we were sung this song by Ms.Teshima, it was very good. And, we asked her for the voice of Therru. She appeared, and she influenced to the story a little. She has a sense of existence like that.

Well, as long as we know what's being said, I don't see a problem. I'd rather prefere a translation which isn't perfect, instead of no translation at all > as I wasn't aware of this interview (like probably most of us).

Hi,
Posted some Ghibli news over here:
http://www.ghibliworld.com/news.html#2406
It's about the to be released third Gedo Senki trailer. Also, NHK's Weekend Japanology with a compilation Ghibli video with a piece of footage showing Howl’s Moving Castle winning at the Venice Film Festival and Isao Takahata talking about the “Chojyu-giga”, an ancient 12th century scroll of 11 meters long depicting animals and nature which can been seen as the first piece of Japanese animation ever.
Regards,
Peter
