what is your general opinion about Isekai anime?Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by saviour2012 Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Recently the genre has become extremely popular
General ideas
1. The character/s put in a different parallel world
2. The character has some responsibility to do something great
3. The main character backstory is of a loser in most cases
4. Magic or something similar
5. Medieval economy and social style
6. Game like env
7. Different races

It has a variety of settings. However one key thing that bother me is the escapism l, this genre is quite literally blatantly escapist. Apart from rpg games, no other media has such level of the concept.

Do you like the idea of escapism?

Personally I think, sometimes I definitely think if I had power I could do x y z. But apart from that I don't have any wish to restart my life. However that may not be true for many many people. One of my all time favorite anime is twelve kingdom, which is a Isekai anime albeit very very old(20 year old). But there is a huge increase in interest in the last 4-5 years. Not sure why. I understand that there is this huge issue of hikikomori all over the world. But should this be some sort of comfort. Not sure if people should take comfort in the impossible.

This is the first that I have heard of Isekai anime, so I don't or can't have any kind of opinion, one way or another at this point... I will search and see what can find out about it...

Thanks, saviour, I think, lol...

Honestly, I don't really care about whether it's escapist. Plenty of other fiction has escapist elements and that's really nothing new. I don't see that as harmful.

But what I would say does bother me about isekai is the way that such a narrow set of features has become this major trend. When I hear a series described as "isekai", I honestly just lose interest, because I feel like I know just what to expect. Of course plenty of people like it, but to me at least, it seems like there isn't enough room for variety. And the fact that the settings are so often video game-inspired - even when it's not actually a video game, as several of them are - seems... not very creative.

I'm sure it would annoy me less if it hadn't been so popular for so long. But I do think the trend will fade away one day.

I feel similar - I have nothing against isekai in principle, but it's been absolutely done to death, and in fact, it's a turn-off for me now. I'd have to be really convinced that it was something exceptional to try an isekai series now.

Although, the novel series I'm translating right now is also an isekai, so I shouldn't badmouth it too much :'D

Hi Kaz and Arren,
Yeah I totally get what you are saying. I mean it has completely overtaken the fantasy genre. We as Ghibli lovers are avid fantasy lovers so it makes sense.

However I think escapism is a major contributor otherwise there is hardly any other factor for it's immense popularity. I think some companies are banking on this fact. The reason this is specifically true is because most popular shows have people of very poor behavioral and mental qualities as the main protagonist. This is a trend only in Isekai.

Hi Husky,
No worries, I was in the same position couple of months ago as well. I think you definitely have watched something of this type. This naming convention is kinda newly popularized. Previously similar anime fell in the fantasy category.

I like them my favorite Isekai is Arifureta(Web/LightNovel ) and the character is Hajime, it is a shame that most of the anime adaptations are just advertisement to the original work and the anime staff usually cut the small moments and details that make the series special to their fans.

This is the best (and shortest) isekai I have seen:

One interesting part of the story is that, while the boy becomes strong in a parallel world, he returns to normal Japan and remains strong there. I guess the same story can be done without any parallel world entirely, but then it would be way less fun.

Anime Sekai, as a rule, is characterized by a rich imagination and a cheerful character. The best isekai anime may be Zero-Starting Life In Another World. Many of the classic tropes and Sekai are showcased in this series, but they surpass the show's overall quality. The character of Subaru, according to https://www.heightcomparison.com/article...nime-characters , is cute and funny, while the rest of the actors are no less attractive. In particular, the first season managed to stand out among all the other Isekai anime released at that time in just a few episodes.

I am not really fond of Isekai Anime because almost every new anime in that genre is kind of like others in the same genre.
