Thanks. Interesting read but it doesn't agree with what you told me (which I prefer and think works better). The first half of that article merely describes different hair colours in various anime series without attributing meaning to it.
Later it describes white/silver/pale gray as signifying evil intent which it supports with many examples most of which (other than Kaoru Nagisa from NGE and Vicious from Cowboy Bebop) I don't recognise.
Red it states is a sign of shape shifting and animal attributes generally with the whole Kitsune folklore thing which might fit some series like Inuyasha but falls well wide of the mark for NGE and Kare Kano.
Pink it suggests implies confused or dual or ambiguous sexuality.
Blonde or yellow apparently implies a troublesome character (which I can believe given the oddness of Asaba and Shibahimne from Kare Kano but in the same series Ikeda Kazuma is anything but trouble which makes that attribution dubious.
Green and blue are given no attributes and purple isn't mentioned.
I'm going to do some more digging.

I did say "more often than not", not "most of the time" or "generally".
The basic idea is that hair colour is usually used to reflect the character, the same way the Japanese are obsessed with blood type and star signs.

Sure. I wasn't expecting to find a rule that fits all situations. I always deal in generalisations. I thought it was you who didn't?
Check - thats a smiley there, OK?
Oh, and another one - meh.

I try not to, rather work with certainties than ambiguity. But I'm the kind of guy who can answer any question with the word "depends".
