The picture where Pippi is putting Mr Nilsson (her monkey) to bed is so cute. I guess I'm not the only one seeing the Mimiko recemblance, there were a few Panda kopanda-pictures after the Pippi ones on livejournal. And you're right husky, Pippi looks like Ma Dola from Laputa too.

No doubt the original creator regretted their decision years later, just like Ursula le Guin did when she refused Miyazaki rights to Earthsea years ago
i saw the artwork last summer and thought it was gorgeous, and possibly a bit more daring than what is the classic Ghibli way of animating, i could be wrong though, working from memory...

Lovely stuff - I see hints of other Miyazaki films in there though - Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, Totoro, Kiki... so perhaps the ideas were not all lost and some of his concepts were used in other films.
I agree with George that the sketches are very daring and full of energy and movement, it would have been a very boisterous cartoon.

definitely. and i guess they must have regret it big time now! on the other hand let's believe that it just wasn't meant to be and that everything happens for a reason
By any means, the best example to how beautiful Miyazaki's work is to others is: Ponyo's theme song...i mean seriously...

Well, a girl like Pippi Longstocking needs a boisterous cartoon. I don't know how familiar people outside of Scandinavia are with Pippi Longstocking, but the Pippi stories are really anarchistic and boisterous. Pippi is a 9 year old girl, living alone because her mother is an angel and her father is a sea pirate. Or alone or alone, her horse and her monkey live with her. Pippi is the strongest girl in the world, she can lift her own horse. She's not exactly naughty or rude, it's just that noone has taught her normal manners. She's a kind of a liberating force to all the well-behaved children living in the town. Much of the humour in Pippi has to do with the fact that Pippi does things differently from normal people. For example, she washes the kitchen floor by tieing two brushes to her feet and skating on the soapy kitchen floor .

It is a shame, from the looks of that artwork Miyazaki would of made a fantastic job of it, and I agree with the fact that the author is probably kicking themselves at how other european sourced stories have turned out at the hand of Miyazaki.
I think it would have also been a really successful film as well. Pitty a real Pitty
and.....
@Husky and Heidi she very much resembles Ma Dolas character, but that doesn't surprise me comparing the personalities of the characters, Miyazaki probably took ideas from it, because they are so similar.
