NARRATOR

The end of break bell drew the students in a loose gaggle back up to homeroom where Akuri-Sensei was waiting to launch into full form. He proceeded to glare and sarcastically reminded his pupils that the bell signalled the end of lunch and not a ten minute free period in which slowly wandering the campus was permissible.

Afternoon lessons were unremarkable and the end of school bell seemed to ring very soon. 1-A's students cleared desks, gathered up bags and chattering noisily went downstairs to the shoe lockers or to various after school clubs. A few students remained behind to do late work or chat but one group gelled together as though by silent pre-agreement and found themselves changing to outdoor shoes and heading to the main gate despite the fact that some of them ought to be attending clubs. The group moved with some purpose even though the wind had risen during the afternoon and it pulled playfully at coats, collars and skirts as the young people went towards the gate.

ENOMOTO REI

I was making Satomi-san uncomfortable. This had been a bad idea after all. Time to make my exit. The young people seemed happy and relaxed enough, or rather, the two girls did. The brown haired boy was very shy. I smiled down at him but he didn't look up. As an encouragement I patted him on the shoulder and gave a small squeeze, though I don't know why.

Hissori-san

I stepped back with a smile. "I should get on. I have work to do and I am taking up your lunch break. It was lovely to see you Satomi-san and lovely to meet your friends. This evening then? Five o'clock? Goodbye." I raised a hand to the group and nodded at them and withdrew, leaving the school by the main entrance and turning right down the hill towards the train station.

ENOMOTO REI

To my great disappointment the young man seemed to shrink back behind one of his friends. Am I that scary?

quote:
"Enomoto-sensei, konnichiwa. Genki desu, anata wa?"
"Daijoubu," I rejoined happily, hoping to put him at his ease.

quote:
"I, ah, didn't expect to see you in school."
I smiled more broadly, pleased to see him respond likewise though his air of faint unease persisted.

"There is no reason why you should. I did mention to your parents that I would drop by to speak with your headmaster and, well, I was passing." My explanation didn't seem to help calm him. Why was he so on edge? He hadn't seemed this shy at home.

I suddenly found myself giving more explanations, without knowing why. "I would normally arrange to come outside of school hours. This was more convenient, it is on my way back from, ahm, a meeting." I stopped suddenly realising I was going to either bore him or make things worse.

I looked around the group; a pretty girl with long black hair, another more bookish young lady with a rather wild unruly mop but an air of something eager about her and... I frowned as my eyes rested on the fourth student, a boy with brown hair and downcast eyes. I looked at him carefully.

"You must be..." A name almost came, then didn't, "You must be Satomi-san's friends. I am pleased to meet you. I am Enomoto Rei. I teach mathematics." I stopped, realising that Satomi-san may not wish me to say who I was. I glanced back at him and waited to let him say something or end the meeting with polite niceties.

ENOMOTO REI

As I passed through the locker area, smiling kindly at a few faces that turned to look at me I noticed one group... or rather within one group I noticed a thick mop of completely white hair. I only know one albino and though I do not know him very well yet, surely it must be...?

"Satomi-san?" I went over. The group turned to look at me as I approached. "Satomi-san! It is you! Konnichiwa! O-genki desu ka?" I stopped beside them, smiling warmly, wanting him to be at ease.

This could be a little awkward but he was a mature young man, no reason this should embarrass him.

ENOMOTO REI

I smiled and stood up, nodding gratefully to Makoto-Kouchou-Sensei for his kindness in granting the interview.

"It has been a while since we last spoke, you have not changed Sensei, still as gracious as ever. For your assistance in this meeting, I thank you very much. It will help me get to know my new student sooner."

He stood up too, though his smile was more controlled. "My pleasure Enomoto-san. It is my great regret that the school lost you as a teacher but I trust you are doing well now?"

"Indeed, Sensei, thank you for asking. I am quite well these days and the private tutoring keeps my mind alert. Once again, thank you. I am sorry if my request to see you was an imposition."

"Not at all, you are most welcome. Did you wish to speak with the student while you are here?"

"May I? That might help. Though some students who take individual tutoring may wish to keep that private. Peer pressure and all that."

"Of course. I understand. And for the other business - thank you also."

"Other business?" I was sure what he was alluding too, my letter had never been answered but both of us knew the situation, "I do not know what you mean, Sensei." I smiled warmly and shrugged the subject aside. Not now.

He opened the door and I made my exit, the slim file under my arm.

"Please - there is no need to see me out. I remember the way." Taking my leave I went along the corridor. The lunch bell rang and within seconds the corridors teemed with students. It felt good to be back in school. I missed the crowds and noise and energy.

But I had more important work to do.

I strode towards the main entrance and found myself passing through the locker area bustling with young people.

Registration was followed by homeroom study period, then morning classes. Before the students were hardly aware, the morning had flown by and the bell rang for lunch.

Physics was the last class before lunch, held in the science lab at the gymnasium end of the ground floor of the second wing.

The Sensei dismissed 1-A and the students began to collect their bags and books and things...

*grins* Your second version was fine. The mention of the new student added a nice link.

But it really doesn't matter.

She's late - so she'll suffer! Muahaha!

Sure. I want to move on to some student interaction time and skip past the Akuri-getting-a-wig-on-beacuse-people-are-late part. That's not too important right now.

Heh, I didn't realise you were going to post right now!

EDIT: Have her dive into her seat just after Akuri goes in but before the bulk of his post.

Same goes for anyone else - or feel free to write your character's arrival before he does his bit, it's not a problem.

AKURI-SENSEI

I was half way to class when the second bell sounded and the noise of its chimes and the skittering of kids' feet down corridors had only just faded away when I slid open the door with a firm shwupp!-clunk! and allowed my frame to fill 1-A's doorway. I glanced at the young lady stood on her own outside the room.

"You must be the 1-B girl. Wait there. I will call you shortly."

I strode in, sliding the door closed behind me.

"Good morning class. Be seated. Be quiet."

I waited for people to go to their desks. I looked around the room scowling at the usual suspects. Not looking down I opened the register, "Respond to your names..." I began calling out family names, still not once looking at the register on my desk but flicking my eyes to each face as I called the name. We had a couple of absences. I'd red 'X' them in the book later.

"Tsugara-san, you may make any Student Council announcements."

The boy came to the front desk and mentioned a couple of items, one about some upcoming tests and one about a school trip to Kyoto in May for which people should register their interest by signing the forms pinned up on the main notice board in the locker area at main entrance. He nodded to me and returned to his desk.

"Good. Now, class, I have one more special announcement to make. We have someone joining us." Returning to the door I slid it open and stuck my head round, "Enter!" I barked at the girl.

I held the door open as she came in and I pointed at the spot on the floor beside my desk, "There."

Going back to my desk I sat and took a few minutes to ink in the register, selecting green and red pens and applying ticks or 'X's as necessary, all the while letting the class stew in silence and the new girl stand there in front of them all. When I was done I glanced at her, then at the students.

"We have a new student joining us from today. She is transferring from class 1-B." I gestured to her with a hand, "You may introduce yourself to us all, then find an empty seat."

DAY FIFTEEN – THURSDAY – 19 APRIL 2007 – “WHEN THINGS GO WRONG.”

NARRATOR

The following days were quiet and unremarkable. The weather continued mild and breezy, though with a few short showers, the wind picking up to strong gusty levels towards the end of the week. On Thursday several friends from 1A had agreed to go after school down to Hino for what was being talked about as the "Sendo-san Visit".

It was morning on that Thursday. The students of 1A had arrived in homeroom and the second bell had just rung for the start of morning classes.

KAZAMI-SENSEI, ART DEPARTMENT

I was tidying up after the last class of the day. The phone rang.

Hai. Kazami. Moshi moshi?, Ume! Are you well? Good, that’s great. Yes, I am. Yes, I’ve got a minute. Yes, I’ve got a while actually… what is it?”

She told me what it was. Ikari Ume told me what was in the Munakata Museum archive concerning that painting. There was a fair old file on it, much of it not especially relevant but some of it was very relevant indeed. When she finished telling me about the official record she lowered her voice and began on the unofficial part, particularly the family letter lodged with the museum archive last year and which was not for public viewing.

“Why 2006?” I asked, and she told me. When she told me it was a good thing I was sitting down. Had I been standing I might have collapsed. I put my elbow on the desk and dropped my forehead onto my palm.

One of the most famous Japanese artists of the last century, and yet that had happened. Why keep it a secret?

“But why that title to the painting?” I asked. It made no sense.

Ume told me, at which point even the fact I was seated didn’t help much. I thanked her for the call, dropped the phone into its cradle with a clatter and slumped at my desk. My head now in both hands.

Before the war? Just how far back did this thing go?”

I didn’t want to be involved with this, but this was just too weird not to be drawn in. I looked out the window across the running track towards the baseball pitch and the trees beyond.

“It does make sense,” Ume had said, “The date isn’t a date, it’s a number: one thousand, nine hundred and forty-four is a prefectural land parcel number. Mizuho,” Ume had said, “nineteen-forty-four isn’t a year, it’s a location.”

A TYPICAL DAY IN APRIL

The end of break bell rang, Akuri-Sensei skulked into the room and before long afternoon lessons of music and civics were taking place.

Just before three o'clock 1-A had a short homeroom period in which to study, make a start on homework, or for those assigned, to clean the blackboard and the room generally and take out the trash, the new class reps ensuring that the jobs were done properly.

At ten to three the final bell rang and with a scowl Akuri-Sensei dismissed the class and sat at his desk flicking through papers.

The PE lesson was followed by English and the Physics lesson in the last period before lunch which was held in the lab on the ground floor of the second block.

When this concluded, it was lunch break.

AKURI SENSEI

quote:
"I'm sorry to bother you sensei, but I seem to have misplaced my trunks when packing my bag this morning. I was wondering if the faculty, or maybe the swim team, has an extra pair of trunks? I know I should be looking for the teacher in charge of the swimming club, but..."
But you decided to waste my very important time anyway. Just because you could.

quote:
"Anyway, if possible I'd prefer not to sit out this class. My swimming form is very bad, and I feel that I need to improve some time soon anyhow."
I glared down at him, if I wasn't in such a hurry I'd take this wonderful opportunity to make the child squirm... what were my options here?

"Go butt naked boy! A real man would. Or are you not one?" = No, sadly, the repercussions from parents or school governors precluded such a sweet option.

"Swim in your shorts, child! Go commando afterwards - or wear your running shorts" = Yes, that had possibilities to demean the absent minded creature.

Being bound by school rules I merely scowled at him. "Ask the sensei in charge of your lesson for the key to the pool storeroom. There's sets of school swim gear - male and female - kept in the green locker at the far end. Do try and select the correct gender. Launder and return them tomorrow."

As he turned to go I let the hammer blow fall, I called him back.

"Your memory form is bad too child. Let us take the opportunity to improve it. By close of day tomorrow, hand in one hundred lines to my desk in the sensei's lounge: 'I will ensure I come to school with the full and correct day's books and equipment.' "

quote:
"Ah, Akuri-sensei. I was just looking for you."
I turned at the sound of the voice, hm, one of my own brood, one of the nest of vipers... "Yes, boy, what is it? I'm in a hurry."
