Yeah, it is pretty rare. It's the only official box set that Ghibli have ever released. It's a limited edition (2000 copies made), released in July 2004 in Hong Kong. Hence, all the DVDs are R3 NTSC.

Each set comes with an individual serial number, a "Certificate of Authenticity" and an 11 piece Original Collectable Postcard set. The 11 titles listed are 2-disc DVDs, with Japanese audio and English/Chinese subtitles. I'm not certain if the extras are subbed though.

I suppose even used it would be a bargain at a $100. Personally I'm waiting for something more complete, but that'll be a really loooong wait.

Hmm, although I didn't mention it, I also went through the whole movie and resynced the subs. Some adjustments might be needed here and there still.

In terms of translation, this version is much better -but still not perfect. Before I rushed through with rough translations based on the subtitles and the dubbed audio. This meant that some lines, where audio existed only in French, were also translated. So subtitles appear when no one is actually speaking! At other times, the translation is completely different.

e.g. Kotetsu says "Ouch! Ouch!" at one point in the film, whereas my original translation was based on the French dialogue which said "Chie, you're scaring me!"

The subtitles are more natural and easier to read too as I use "didn't" instead of "did not", etc.

With all this said, however, you are probably better off not using my translation for anything other than reference. My French being terrible, I still didn't understand a few scenes and had to wing it a little.

e.g. When Tetsu is walking alone in the park and talking to himself. I'm not sure I completely understood all of what he said.

Yep, excited about this too....wonder what the other mystery platform will be.

Only thing that annoys me is the title. Was it really that difficult to produce a translation that makes sense?

"The Other World" not "The Another World"!

New Chie the Brat / Jarinko Chie Subs

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I last posted, but I hope this will interest some of you.

The only english subs available for Jarinko Chie have been the ones I released years ago and they were pretty terrible. My source was mainly the literal subs from the French DVD, but for some reason I also used the dub.

Since Studio Ghibli have neglected to include official English subs with their latest Blu-ray release, I thought I'd give it another go (using only the subs this time). Though still far from perfect, they're much better than my previous attempt.

You can grab the new subs from one of the below sharing sites. They contain subs (SRT and Vobsub) synced for the official blu-ray and COR fansub versions. Timings can, however, easily be adjusted using "Subtitle Workshop" or "SubtitleCreator".

"Night on the Galactic Railroad" is not a pre-Ghibli movie. The closest it comes to being a pre-Ghibli movie is Ghibli veteran Makiko Futaki, who worked as a key animator on the film and joined Ghibli after the completion of Nausicaa.

I recently watched the film and saw little to recommend in it, besides it being perhaps the best exercise in patience I have ever experienced. I generally enjoy slow-paced movies and books, but for me, the ending did not justify the wait.

That isn't a very fair comparison. Miyazaki and Takahata are both directors, but because Miyazaki is also the chief animator his films have artistic consistency.

Kazou Oga has largely been in charge of background in all of Hayao Miyazaki's films since Totoro, but I believe he also worked on Ponyo so this does not explain the change in background style.

The change in style seems to be Miyazaki's choice. He repeatedly stated (just like Goro did for Gedo Senki) that he would be using "simple art". Moreover, his storyboards for Ponyo were unusually detailed (i.e. they are all in colour), meaning that he had a clear vision and wanted the animators to follow it closely.

Suzuki going to Hollywood at this stage is a positive step, even if it is only for talks.

On the other hand, I'm a little confused by the announcement of the US producers, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Don't they work for LucasFilm?

Just wanted to point out the link in my sig has the scans and translation paired together.

The translation, however, is not as smooth as Saddletank's. I mostly used the translation by Yohei Honda and Bryan Wilkinson from Nausicaa.net, because it remains as faithful as possible to the original poetic structure.

Oh yes I remember now -I even downloaded all the volumes so far, but I had forgotten because I'm waiting for its completion before reading. The scans are very nice quality though.

I don't think dballred is Daniel Thomas, unless he likes to keep two usernames on this forum...and I can't really see the point in that.

This question gets asked very frequently. Perhaps it should be made a sticky, or even better, part of some general FAQ.

Anyways, the below link points out the only official boxset Ghibli have released for DVD.

Thank you, Kanta. It's good to hear from you again.

Since I translated the manga from another (french) translation source, it probably has quite a few mistakes -especially since my french is very bad. I thought that Takashi was perhaps repeating what Matsuke said, like some people do when they want to may sure they understood correctly.

Yamadas Compilation Comic (Translated)

Hello everyone,

Originally a fan translation group called Adachi Universe set about translating this compilation of Yamada comic strips, but the group became inactive before completing it. I have therefore translated the remaining pages of this volume, but I do not plan to translate the rest (vol. 2-4). Sorry.

Fans of the "My Neighbours the Yamadas" movie by Takahata should enjoy these short strips -although the humour is pretty hit and miss. Well, hope you all enjoy it anyway.

Just a little heads up...

For many weeks now I've been noticing a countdown clock on the front page of Nausicaa.net. Today I saw it reach zero...and then it started going up again (pretty hilarious).

The countdown did, however, serve a purpose. That purpose was to welcome a new GhibliWiki service, created by Team Ghiblink (the people behind Nausicaa.net).

At the moment it is little more than the information on Nausicaa.net, but I'm sure that in time it'll become a very useful tool for fans.
