Very true. He's just lost his parents, and has to look after himself and his sister.

It's been long since I've seen Grave of the fireflies, but doesn't Seita realize his father is dead very late in the movie (when the war is over)? I've always interpreted it so that Seita waits for his father to contact him, so that he doesn't make the wrong decision. He saves the money because he believes that Japan will win the war and his father will be reunited with them (and they will of course need the money then). He only acts without his father's approval when he realizes little Setsuko's condition is life-threatening.

Heh, Jiji looks kind of chocked. Like if he knew he'd be eaten soon.

I cried at the beginning of Up (when they told the grumpy old man's backstory). But I'm prone to cry during movies. I bawled my eyes out when watching the movie adaptation of Les Miserables. ( I love Ghibli and musicals, I mean, how much nerdier can you get?)

Though I too agree with Heidi, I sometimes dislike Disney because of how sexist most of the movies are. I haven't seen Tangled or Brave, but I feel as though all of the other movies except Mulan have helpless, beautiful young girls waiting for the guy to swoop in and save the day. Almost all of the girls are slender, "perfect", romantic, and "weak". Mulan is the only strong character...

In general, though, I do enjoy Disney/Pixar movies.

I highly recommend you to see Brave if you want a Disney movie with a strong heroine. The heroine is really strong, fighting society's (and her mother's) views of what a princess should and shouldn't do. And the princes who come to ask for her hand in marriage are more of a comic relief.

I've got a Jiji!Go to Thread Search for Posts by Heidi80 Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

So it was the last meeting of my adhd-course and I decided to treat myself for sticking to the course by going to a nearby japanese store. It's a wonderful little place, with a kindly japanese gentleman who always offers you sweets when you enter the shop. It has some Ghibli things, mostly Totoro-related. I've never seen any soft toys of any other Ghibli characters than the Totoros and susuwataris there. But today when I entered.....a certain black cat with a red ribbon was staring at me from the shelf. I have to admit it was love at first sight. Now Jiji is sitting next to my computer at university looking at what I'm doing. I've already introduced him to the susuwatari who lives in my coat pocket and the meeting went very well. I just hope that the chibi Totoro and Totoro who live with me will like the newcomer too . Now if I could find a soft toy Teto somewhere........

I have to dissagree with Guaporense's Disney and Pixar comment. I actually quite enjoy Pixar's movies (although not as much as Ghibli's of course). Some of Pixar's movies, like Toy story 3, are really quite deep and complex.

What is "GoTF"?

I assume it's Grave of the fireflies.

If I remember correctly, there are loads of Ghibli characters flying across the sky (Kiki, Totoro, Porco/Marco etc) during the scene in Pom Poko where the tanuki spook the people.

Yupa-sama is deadGo to Thread Search for Posts by Heidi80 Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

According to another Ghibli forum, the actor who played Yupa-sama in Nausicaa has died. Yupa has always been one of my favorite male Ghibli characters, because of his kindness and wisdom. RIP

Now, hey, I was going through my favourites on DeviantART to see what gems I'd collected in these few months I've been away, and just had to put this here. It's so perfect!

EDIT: Found this too!

Awww, Totoro doesn't quite seem to know what to do with that piece of melon. Silly old Totoro.

Most people buy individual DVDs though.

If you do online shopping, be aware that there are a LOT of bootleg/pirated copies there. Obviously they won't tell you that it's a bootleg.

Here's an example of bootleg being passed as an original.

There is no way whatsoever any good legal company will squeeze 23 movies into 6 DVDs; the loss in quality is unimaginable.

Of course some sets are local-exclusive, so they may be legit despite how they look. The best is to buy from reputable sellers like Amazon, or your local video shop.

I think I would still buy this if I got it here in Finnland (I don't buy stuff online). There are many of the pre Studio Ghibli-stuff that I'd really want to see.
