Hi all
HL: I took a few days off work in the lead up to the Easter break so have had some time off and was also able to visit (outdoors) some family I haven't seen in a long time - including a new addition who is only a few days old. I also have a giant chocolate rabbit bigger than my head to get through.
LL: Back to work tomorrow! Boooo! Also fell out of my workout regime over the time off and it's always a struggle to get back in the habit.
Hope everyone else had a nice Easter (if that's relevant to your country/culture)!

Just dropping by (for the first time in a LONG time) to say hi
It's been a really busy year or so...before I knew it time had flown by since I last visited the forum. A lot has happened in that time so feels a little tricky to summarise.
I hope everyone is staying happy and healthy though, and I promise I haven't forgotten everybody!
I'm personally doing well, living in London with my partner and currently working on applications for teacher training to become an English Lit teacher. Finally I will be able to talk about books all day haha.
I will try to visit more often.

Just dropping in
Congrats Fen!!!!!! Hope everything is going smoothly and wishing you and the baby good health.
HL: So I've decided NOT to recontract haha and I think it's the best decision for me. So I will be leaving Japan (Tokyo) in August.
I've had a good time here, I'm lucky to have LOVELY coworkers and I've made some kind friends etc. But at the end of the day I miss my family/partner and I also find the JET role kind of....limited. It may be different for public JETs but as a private school JET and only being based in one school I spend too much of my week sat at my desk for my tastes. I'm used to working in a high-energy office environment with lots of responsibility and even managing people, so I've found it hard to adjust to a role where I have very little free rein.
Japan has been amazing and I'll be super sad to leave but I'm excited to head home for my new chapter as well! I'm planning on a small career change when I get back so that will be good. Also looking forward to really making the most of my final 7 months

Thanks everyone! Now I've gotten used to the idea a bit more and done some research I am really excited

Wow, Tokyo! That's surprising. I was under the impression that was pretty rare.
I'm not so sure that private/public schools would affect your working hours much. I don't think you need to really worry about that.
That's what I thought, but going off the JET Programme reddit page alone it looks like a fair percentage of people have gotten Tokyo. Apparently there's an increasing number of people being sent (mostly to private schools)
Congrats on your results Kaz!!!

Mixedlight: Found out my JET placement today! It's a relief after feeling like I've been waiting to hear for ages.
The placement though is in Tokyo and...if I'm honest I'd had hopes to be somewhere semi-rural. I've lived in London the past few years and was looking forward to a change of pace. I'm also nervous about finding a decent apartment and I've been attached to a private school which I'm concerned will mean longer/more working hours.
On the other hand, I'm thrilled just to be going at ALL and I think Tokyo will have a lot of amazing things to do. Maybe I would have just got bored senseless being out in the countryside anyway.

I don't think I'll post any photos we take openly in the forum (I know I used to post pics but it feels a bit strange now!) but they'll be available upon request haha.
We don't know where we're being sent yet - I think people find out their location in May

LL: Unfortunately I've been made an alternate for the JET programme! I've decided to give it until early May to see if I'm upgraded (who knows eh?) but past that point there's some major life stuff I've been putting off which I'm not sure I'd want to any further.
I don't know how likely/often people do get upgraded, but fingers crossed I guess!

Porco Rosso maybe? Someone saying it during the fight between Curtis and Porco at the end?

I always read how these killer guys live their normal lives and noone suspects them; it's not because they put a lot of effort to hide that they are different from normal people - it's because they are not that much different at all.
No offense but this is creepy as heck.

Yeah unfortunately my general anime/manga tastes definitely strays towards the mushy stuff!

No particular order and I'm certain there are some I'm forgetting!
Ouran High School Host Club - One of the first anime which I fell in love with
Psycho Pass
Tokyo Ghoul
Paradise Kiss
Lovely Complex
Ore Monogatari
Kimi ni Todoke
Kuragehime
Fruits Basket - not so much now, but for how much I loved it at the time.
Mushishi
These are just what sprang to mind and probably isn't a truly definitive list....

I would agree with Kaz that Totoro is overrated - I find the narrative a little basic compared to some of the others. I also think Whisper of the Heart is overrated, though perhaps my view is skewed by it's popularity on the Tavern. I just find it kinda sappy.
I would say Kaguya-hime is veeery underrated and I actually think Ponyo doesn't get much attention but is super cute and colourful.
I also think The Cat Returns doesn't get much hype but is very charming and features one of the most likeable Ghibli heroines.

I find it SUPER interesting that Laputa is no.1 considering for me it's probably one of the Studio Ghibli films I'm the least interested in and had the least impact on me.
I'm more aware of how popular WotH is with people on the forum, even though once again it isn't a favourite of mine - I find it a bit too twee.
I think poor Pom Poko is a little hard done by and I would certainly rate Ponyo above From Up On Poppy Hill. I mean the fact that From Up On Poppy Hill beats out Grave of the Fireflies and The Cat Returns is also bonkers to me! So funny to see how different everyone's tastes are

I'm currently watching Ancient Magus Bride and Black Clover.
Ancient Magus Bride I knew I would like because I love the manga, but it's fairly slow-paced and odd so I'm aware it might not be to everyone's tastes.
Black Clover I'm watching because after introducing my boyfriend to anime he favours shounen - he's a big fan of One Punch Man and My Hero Academia, and this is of a similar vein. The protag is a little shout-y, but it's had some cute moments so far that have kept me interested.
I'm keen to watch Sangatsu no Lion so might pick that up!

LL: Didn't get a job I applied for. The thing is it's not even that I particularly REALLY wanted the job itself, I'm just very unhappy where I currently am so was excited at the prospect of change.
HL: Going to be hand-delivering my JET application early next week (wish me luck!)

Hey!
I'm going to finish writing up my JET application in the next few days and I was wondering whether anybody had some suggestions for where to put as my desired location?
I'd like it to be somewhere semi-rural, so I can get an appreciation for the beauty of the Japanese countryside but so that's it not a tiny town and I don't end up feeling too isolated. It would probably be nice if it was big enough that there would be likely to be another JET person or foreigners living there.
I would love it if it was either coastal or up in the mountains - somewhere scenic. Also preferably somewhere with lots of historical buildings rather than particularly modern.
So far I've had wakayama/takayama/hyogo recommended. Thoughts? I've also read that you should never put any of the big cities (Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo) because the availability is low in comparison to the demand. Arren?
Thanks
