The animation will be very short, just to show the capabilities of the puppets. It will 'capture a moment' rather than tell a story. I'm making them more from the perspective of showing my skills with puppet fabrication

Thanks Flare! I hope so too, my exhibition will be next summer, so I've got a while (but given the amount to do and my busy uni schedule, not long at all, haha)

Nausicaa Stop Motion ProjectGo to Thread Search for Posts by ~OneSummersDay~ Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

EDIT: This project is finished in time for my graduate exhibition, I thought I'd share it with you all! You can still see all of my making process on Instagram and my blog

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share with you a project I'm working on for my third year of university. I'm making stop motion puppets of Nausicaa and Kai from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Puppet fabrication for stop motion in the industry is my ambition, so I plan to make these puppets from start to finish, armatures to costuming, props and lots of feathers!

I'm only in the early stages of the project at the moment, but I've started blogging about it here:

http://rayfriendsadventuresinminiature.blogspot.co.uk

And am always posting photos of my progress on Instagram:

https://instagram.com/rayfriendbrown/

I thought it would be cool to share this project with other people around the world who love Ghibli and Nausicaa as much as I do.

Would be great to hear your thoughts, be it here, on my blog or Instagram. I'm hoping to update the blog at least twice a week with my progress.

Here's a photo of some early armatures I made to give you an idea of what I'm up to!

Ah nice, thanks for the research everyone! So it seems to be 20th March in the UK, that's exciting. Usually I'm not very hyped for Takahata's stuff, but the style of this film looks really cool and different.

It's based off of a Japanese folk story, right? I love how bizarre fairy tales often are. Also, the soundtrack by Hisaishi is looking to be another triumph. Looking forward to it

Does anyone in the UK know if Princess Kaguya is going to see a cinematic release over here? I believe the US had theirs in October but still haven't heard anything in ol' England.

I would agree that she wanted to kill her; earlier in the film Moro said that she planned to 'bite her head off'. I think Lady Eboshi's survival was important in the plot in terms of redemption and peace at the end.

It was directed by Yonebayashi but Miyazaki did the scripting I think?

My situation is similar to Orphic - raised in a religious household but no longer religious. My parents are Christians and I greatly respect their faith, it just isn't what I believe in.

Considering the name of the original poster, seems likely they're a robot and not a real person. I like the idea of this thread regardless! So, new discussion of the day:

Do you own any pets? I have a cat called Hunter. He's a blue korat, which is sub-breed of Siamese. In the 90s they were nearly extinct and then they started breeding them in Thailand again. Here's my boy!

Sorry leonboy, but I have to disagree!

I concur that old-school animation such as Conan greatly emphasises the skill of the artist, because it is created solely using traditional techniques that take skill and mastering, but that doesn't mean modern animation can't achieve the same charm.

It's undeniable that Miyazaki's influence over his films are huge as director, but you have to remember the whole team of people behind him putting the work in. Yonebayashi and Goro's styles are different to Miyazaki's, as is Takahata's. Yes, Miyazaki is most certainly a genius, he has every element of creating a powerful animation nailed and his confidence in what he does shines through in his work. But I believe that diversity is valuable within Ghibli, and the films produced by different directors have their merits.

Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but there are a good few scenes in both Arrietty and Poppy Hill that are memorable and heart-warming; charming in their own right.

Neither are massively plot-based, (similar to Whisper of the Heart), but I believe that their strength is more in the subtle conveyance of emotions and feelings that viewers can perhaps relate to. Both are coming-of-age type films in different respects - Arrietty is discovering who she is and what she wants as she ages, Umi and Shun are reflecting on their losses in the past and the futures they can perhaps build together.

To say that these films shouldn't need magnificent music, to me, is ludicrous. Miyazaki's reliance on Joe Hisaishi, who composed the music for most of his films, is pretty massive. Imagine the train scene in Spirited Away without 'The Sixth Station', the finale of Princess Mononoke without 'Ashitaka and San, the tree growing scene in My Neighbour Totoro without 'Moonlight Flight'. Arguably, the animation needs the music as much as the music needs the animation!

I second what Roar said about Kondo, I absolutely LOVED Whisper of the Heart...he had such a promising career ahead! His death was so tragic.

Of course a lot of credit must go to Miyazaki, but I agree with Spidey. And when you think of the hundreds of people behind the production of these masterpieces, it put things into perspective.
