  RPG Discussion - OOC

Lets let the random thoughts thread stay full of random thoughts.

Thanks to Kazegami for the picture inspiration.

The first thing we might want to decide then, is do we go with a new game set in the same universe, with perhaps a reunion of some of the characters when they are older, or do we go for a completely different setting.

I think we should do same universe, new characters, because if we bring back old characters, then the newbie users might not get old jokes or may feel left out.

Good idea Saddles.

I agree that using old characters would be a bad idea. It would get confusing because of new people, and old players not remembering everything. I also get the impression many of us want to make new characters anyway.

I was never able to get too active in the old RPG that we had. I was able to join in on a few very small contributions, but I just don't seem to have the skills needed to continue the flow and continuity needed. When this gets started again, maybe I can add a little something, but I will have to leave the setting up to you more talented people...

Hahaha, was suddenly reminded of a bunch of us new sailors just out of boot camp in 1965, sitting in the huge lounge area we had in the Public Works Department barracks and recording a number of skits on a little 3-inch tape recorder I had. The subject? Tracking down abominable snowmen (Yeti's) in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet. We found tracks and had sightings and fell off the ledges, complete with blood-curdling screams (we had a lot of those, lol). There would be 4 or 5 of us and we would frequently grab someone passing by to add a scream or bit of dialogue to the tape and laugh at the final results...

Honestly, Husky, as one of the most awesome and active members here, not having you in a new RPG would be a big disappointment. You and I are a bit older than most here but I think we are both young at heart and RPing does sharpen your wits and your writing skills, so please think hard about joining us.

So - right. New universe entirely.

That puts us back to the question of which universe.

We can simply go with a setting of contemporary Japan, whatever town or city we like and play it from there. Plot or story may come out of it as we go.

There are some series like Haruhi where down in the town are ordinary shopkeepers and such who have their own lives to live. I am sure there's material in that kind of setting.

Or we use a Ghibli movie or a TV series as the basis of a world that gives all of us something to "stand on" as a start.

One world I do think has potential is Susei Gargantia which is an ocean world with floating ship cities and base ourselves there.

The first of those options sounds good to me, as it's the closest to my suggestion of rebooting the old story. On the other hand, using an existing setting from another work would be a problem because of people having varied levels of knowledge about it.

I think you may be correct in keeping a (generally) speaking normal Japanese setting. It would be nice if there was at least one unusual element about it though - similar to the supernatural element in the previous. Just gives it a little spice and direction.

Oh yeah, I wasn't counting that out by any means! I was actually imagining it going a little like the other game, where some element of the supernatural or whatever gets introduced to an otherwise fairly ordinary environment.

Mm, it is really. To me anyway. I imagine the RPG as being like an anime; we use anime characters to represent our characters, I remember we used to intersperse bits of Japanese into the conversations where we could. I suppose it needn't necessarily be that way, but it's just part of it for me.

I am in agreement the setting should either be Japanese or fantasy. We are an anime forum after all!

I think that the Japanese setting would be best in that we have all seen them in the anime we have all watched. We can relate to that as a common thing for all members, so it wouldn't be too strange. As for keeping the old RPG and building on that, I don't know... Many of the 'cast' have gone on to other things and are not around any more.

Thank you for your comments, Saddles. I knew I liked you for some reason, lol... Seriously, thank you...

BTW, don't forget that there is another, ahem, older person in our ranks now, good ol' hunters moon...

So, what we have so far is a entirely new characters based in a Japanese town with a supernatural twist to it. I think the next thing we should figure out is what is that twist!

The twist might not be known at the start... Sort of a surprise as we move along maybe???
moving into it gradually...

Last time the twist was introduced after we began the game. This meant that at first players didn't know how to deal with it and some mistakes were made, but since it wasn't set in stone, everything worked itself out.

I'd agree that a Japanese setting makes sense, since we all live in different places, and Japan fits our common interests. So I'm happy with that. Although, I also remember last time using bits of Japanese here and there, and to be honest I always find that very awkward. So except for untranslatable words/phrases, I'd prefer to avoid that.

I quite like it when someone says "Hai!" or "Arigato!" because I so easily imagine how it sounds (from anime of course) so for me its not a problem.

I guess if its a long sentence we could put a footnote with the translation.

Should we shortlist a selection of Ghibli or other anime universes and try to choose the one most people like? I think its most commonly preferred that the setting is contemporary.

Heh, it's a touch weeaboo-ish I know, but I quite like it. No one needs to do it so it's all good. ^-^

Contemporary setting gets a definite yes from me. Not that I wouldn't enjoy a historical setting, but it's just that then you need to start thinking about a certain degree of historical accuracy like clothes and buildings and... well, everything. Personally I can get way bogged down in researching details sometimes if I'm having to do RP like that. Takes a lot more time and effort. So it's easier for everyone if we're playing in a world reasonably similar to our own.

So, if we're talking Ghiblis then what are we left with... Whisper of the Heart, Ponyo, Spirited Away...

The sort of thing that's most appealing to me right now is something like a mix of Spirited Away and Uchouten Kazoku. I like the fantasy element quite strong, personally. I like things to be less science fiction and more supernatural.

I feel the same way! I'm particularly fond of the idea of Japanese spirits, like the soot-sprites or kodama. Sort of a Mushishi situation maybe, where spirits make up a part of the human world and have an effect on it but most people can't see them?

If you wanted to make it heavily derived from Spirited Away, there could be a 'boundary' where people can pass into a spirit area - an abandoned shrine or something. The only problem I can see with this is it could easily result in the game becoming heavily supernatural rather than just a little.

I'm cool with the Spirited Away setting. I enjoyed the movie very much, and the idea of the spirits is a good one, since we can all find at least one spirit that we know. I went back and read over the first 27 pages of Isakaya High....

And I was completely blown away. Goodness gracious, that storyline and those characters! My personal favorites so far are Takako and Tanaka. Cake girl, lol.

The Isakaya RP got better as it went along. There were rivalry scenes between my guy and Roar's, there was a budding gay romance, a budding lesbian romance, the shadows became more and more spooky and it wasn't certain if they were benign or mischievous, there was a dark past history of the land on which the school was built which was originally a shrine and then a place where travellers rested in the care of monks, a freaky painting done in 1945, an art lady teacher who was doing her own investigations and of course the resident looney Natsuba who had a penchant for talking to the rain and reading people's minds.

I really do think the basic idea would make an excellent anime series. We were doing things that I haven't seen in any anime.
