  Only Yesterday GKIDS Showing

Tonight I watched "Only Yesterday" in theaters thanks to GKIDS' Studio Ghibli Retrospective. I went to the showing in Boston and I plan to also see My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaa, as well as a few others if I can fit it in to my schedule.

Has anyone had a chance to attend one of these GKIDS showings yet? It was incredible! Everyone in the theater was a devout Studio Ghibli fan! I should have worn a Ghibli Tavern t-shirt!

Oh, and I also wrote a little blog post about it:

You have our deepest envy

"Only yesterday" is my favourite Takahata movie, I'd love to see it in big screen - but my chances are so dim...

I hope the subtitles were good (the movie has many japanese culture references) ... and that everybody stayed in the theater during the closing credits Sheez, Takahata is so great!

Actually, everyone did stay through the ending credits. I was surprised. Unfortunately, there were many empty seats in the theater which was very disappointing.

If I've understood correctly, the reason why Disney wouldn't touch Only yesterday was fore it's "adult content" (most likely the stuff about periods and the boys obsession with the girls). To me this sounds really weird, if they were only worried about the "adult content" they could have put a high age restriction, like 11 or 13 on it. Ghibli is the best, the mouse company sucks. I myself love Only yesterday and think it's a really beautiful movie. You're right what you said in your blog about Taeko seeming like a real character. For me, characters have always been Takahata's strongest point.

Disney has its own merits so i wouldn't say they suck, but my opinion on the Disney v Ghibli debate is that some people prefer Ghibli, others haven't watched Ghibli. The films are just better imo, for me, no Disney film is as powerful as Only Yesterday, but i guess some people find the 'entertainment factor' of Disney to be a better watch.... i like Disney films by the way, don't mean to sound to negative towards them...

I guess there is a marketing issue here. In USA (in the West?) it's difficult to market an animated movie which is not directed (at least primarily) to kids, specially if it has the Disney trademark attached. And, to be honest, I suspect that this movie would not sell well. Sad but understandable.

Yes, but that's rather a Ghibli virtue (also Miyazaki's characters are great). Some Takahata marks are the beauty of realistic-melancholic scenes (I love the scene when Taeko walks with her mother and tries to cheer herself by singing...) and the well-rounded scripts (that ending!...)

Ermm, sorry I didn't make myself clear enough here. Disney's own movies don't such, I love the Disney renaissance. The company Disney suck in the way they bring Ghiblis movie's to the west. They put in extra music and dialogue and generally change the atmosphere of the movie. Change can sometimes be good, but almost none of the changes Disney have made for Ghibli's movies better. For example, one of the most beautiful and emotional scenes in Kiki's delivery service, the scene where daddy comes to Kiki's room to look at his little girl in her witch's dress, was almost ruined in the Disney version. They put in extra music (who in their right mind would try to alter Joe Hisaishi's work) and put in extra lines like "I love you daddy". The scene almost always brings a tear into my eye in the original version, it's just so beautiful and sad at the same time. You understand from the scene that Kiki is a daddy's girl and that daddy has problems understanding that his little witch is actually a big girl and going away. The way that he picks her up and holds her close to him before telling her that she can always come back home, if things don't work out. The english version is way too cute and doesn't have the same depth as the japanese. (rant over). Regarding Only yesterday, I think that Disney should have let someone else bring it to USA if they were too scared to do it.
