I think the boy whose cooking class lesson was ruined and who was bullied was perhaps one of those poor people who just do get bullied - I imagine his young life is a completly traumatic mess and he rages against anyone who he thinks got him into his predicament.

This event is not the first time he's been picked on.

That sub-plot might also be a little steal from the classic folk-horror story "The Monkey's Paw" in which, while the paw has the power to grant you three wishes, and you can wish for good things for yourself, the evil spirits at work within the magic make your benefit into someone elses suffering.

That scene is also a device to help Makoto Konno see the consequences of her choices, and is a turning point in her journey to being a more mature person.

Has anyone watched the live action that is like a continuation of the original novel? It's not overly special, but it made me cry. I thought it was sweet. I even put it in my English project, the trailer..

I've always loved the name Makoto.. It fits well with the story.
