Posted by husky51 on 03.05.2015, 12:26 AM: What is an oyster card? I've never heard of them before... |
Posted by Saddletank on 03.05.2015, 03:54 AM: Its a pre-pay card used to pay for bus journeys in London. Been a while since I worked in London but I had no idea Oyster cards were the only way to pay now.

Posted by husky51 on 03.05.2015, 12:09 PM: Yes, I can understand that... remembers back to trying to figure out payment and change in Vietnam, Hong Kong and Japan. A little easier in Japan and Hong Kong, though. Thumbing thru the coins, though, yeah, that took time.

Posted by arren18 on 03.05.2015, 01:16 PM: Yeah, I've never understood the name... According to Wikipedia, this is the reason:

Posted by husky51 on 03.05.2015, 05:26 PM: I've read it once, but I felt that I was distracted at the time, so I plan to re-read it at least twice more before I give my thoughts. |
Posted by arren18 on 03.05.2015, 06:03 PM: Ah husky, you misunderstand me. You've seen an essay I did for one class, but now I'm finished with my dissertation, which is a much bigger deal! It's the biggest individual piece of work in my degree. And that means I'm almost done with the whole thing.

Posted by foreignfilmfreak on 03.05.2015, 08:34 PM: A dissertation is like a thesis, right? I've rarely heard the term used here. Although good job on that!!
|
Posted by arren18 on 03.05.2015, 08:57 PM: Oh, strange. It's pretty standard here. On the other hand, people rarely use "thesis" in my experience.

Posted by husky51 on 03.05.2015, 09:05 PM: /Ah, ha... I see... and unnerstand... ya gotta start using some American words that we's can unnerstan' over here...lol |
Posted by Saddletank on 03.06.2015, 04:07 AM: HL: Put an application in on another place - yet another conversion above a stables on a very isolated farm. Not so cute as the previous one but much bigger, lots of storage, covered parking, in an amazing location atop a hill with the most incredible almost 360deg views... and cheaper!

Posted by Roarkiller on 03.06.2015, 10:50 AM: I got my honours without a thesis, and first class at that. Just put together a slipshod machine and half-baked report on it. Any wonder I ain't got no pride over it.
|
Posted by foreignfilmfreak on 03.06.2015, 02:37 PM: Haha I don't think that would fly here. We do thesis papers where they have to do independent classes focusing on research. Not sure the length of these theses but they do them for the entirety of their final year. Some students don't have to do a thesis but that's a bit rare. They get out of it by doing other projects. I know one girl was able to write a novel as her honours project.

Posted by foreignfilmfreak on 03.12.2015, 09:09 AM: WL: Basically was indirectly given a job offer yesterday?? To a place I never applied?? Although I'm totally willing to work there. |
Posted by husky51 on 03.12.2015, 09:45 AM: Whoa!

Posted by foreignfilmfreak on 03.12.2015, 04:14 PM: The one I have an interview for is a popular sandwich shop near my apartment. The place that may have offered me part-time employment for the summer is as a server at a Vietnamese restaurant.
