  Cosplay

Normally I avoid this like the plague because the people look plain embarrassing and the quality of photography and locations (in some school gym or something) is dire.

However this site randomly came up in Google and I think this is some of the best cosplaying I've ever come across, here some of the people actually suit some of the costumes. The basic rules of cosplaying are 1) be very slim 2) be very good looking 3 ) have confidence to carry it off but in addition to that this photographer has chosen locations and camera angles that really work.

Whoah that's brilliant! XD

The one as Yuuko from xxxHolic was great, and OHSHC one was really good, 'specially the twins and Haruhi.

Cool!

Yep, the whole crowd of OHSHC people together was very well done. Megan has the Vampire Knight manga so I know these costumes are quite close, and this guy just carries it off so well, he has the right face, the right expression, super-cool, everything. And a great costume. I love all this big buttons, big lapels, 17th century European/quasi military style stuff:

Just a shame the photographer didn't colour correct for the ambient (street?) lighting, or perhaps the green face is intended?

The Major Motoko/GITS player and costume isn't so great but the location there overlooking the city at night is perfect.

Psylocke from X-Men caught my eye though, no idea why. It was the background setting that worked best I think.

I've seen some pretty good cosplay actually... Unfortunately there is a lot that's just lame. And the photos on that particular site... I dunno, a lot of them didn't really impress me, but maybe I'm just not familiar with the series that did have especially good photos.

Unfortunately, a picture of a hairy hunky guy cosplaying as Chii has permanently put me off cosplay.

But yeah, Psylocke is really good. I think Rider from FSN comes a close second. That, or Cloud/Tifa. Or maybe I just love that sword (which unfortunately is VERY complicated to replicate for real).

Ergo Proxy's Real photoshoot should've been done at night, she's supposed to be goth, and goth don't do sunlight. 'Sides, the anime doesn't even have much sunlight.

Some of them were pretty cool.

In the OHSHC ones there was one with one cool twin and one ugly twin but they all had really ugly blonde girls to play Tamaki? wth? :S

But yes a few were impressive, some of them we're a bit 'eww put that away please' though. I once saw a fantastic cosplayer of Ichigo from Bleach, thats the best one i've ever seen. He really looked the part.

:S No offense to overweight people but it looks slightly strange when someone who is clearly not the skinniest person around is playing a anime charachter who is meant to be slim. But yeahh I think a lot of the costumes themselves were good, perhaps not the people.

Thats the thing isn't it? Anime people are sooo skinny, like Barbie dolls with long thin necks. Normal shaped humans look weird, their eyes are too small for a start

But there were some nice ones there and the settings helped.

Haruko was my personal favourite.

Ye, but didnt she still look exactly right? if i had seen that image amongst a bunch of anime screenshots it wouldnt have caught my eye at all, i would have thought it was from the show.
The Nana's looked perfect too.. but not the guy doing Ren.

Yeah, Haruko was the only one that I was really impressed with.
I think Cosplaying is pretty lame and ott. I would never do it, but if ti makes you happy... go for it.
Even with the Haruko one I thought... - It's well made, but seriously...?-
I -personally- don't see the point in it.

Thats kinda the point though JRR

There is no point, it's a very....hedonistic? hobby. The people who get the enjoyment out of it are the people who are doing it, on the whole it's not for the benefit of viewers or fans.

Then again I'm bound to be bias, I've cosplayed before and used to be part of a LARP group, the White Dragons. It was hilarious fun. I'm pretty introverted naturally and found it highly enjoyable to roam around a forest with 40 other people dressed as knights and wizards trying to hunt orcs

Blunt! Sharp! Magical-Sharp!
Immune!

Buggers

You don't see the point in playing dress-up? Ah, poor you! It's fun, that's why people do it!

Because real men don't play dress up.

Seriously though, while I understand where they're coming from (I mean, who DOESN'T want to be like their fav hero/heroine?), it gets kinda silly, even grotesque, when you try to be someone you DEFINITELY cannot be, like, ever.

I mean, a hairy middle-aged man cosplaying as Sailor Moon?! Deserves to be locked up, I tell you.

Sure there are borderlines and much of cosplaying is near them if not over them but its easy to see the point in doing it. And no-ones MAKING you go to the web pages that have the fat hairy male sailor-moon cosplayers on.

And no, that wasn't a request for a link.

Real men play dress-up, of course they do. Taking on an alter-ego in a made up role and playing that character is called acting...

Nah, "real men" secretly love it.

You have to understand that cosplay for a lot of people is about costumes and replication and not about trying to look like certain characters. For example, the people in Saddletank's link look absolutely nothing like their respective anime characters. And they can't really, because except for perhaps Miyazaki's films, anime characters don't have the characteristics of any human beings I have seen. Anime characters can have wavy blue hair that sticks up at one end and yet look completely normal, I have not seen this noble feat replicated anywhere on this planet as of yet. For most people it's more of a costume/hobby thing, and that's fine for them. I personally am not too interested in it.

(Saddletank)

Well, 2 out of three ain't bad... Oh wait, dang it... I lost out on the first two.... *whine*

As for dressing up... Go see a 'Star Trek' convention sometime, Man, that is overkill, lol...

Still and all, not like coplay in anime...

Some of my mates went to a sci-fi convention dressed as a bantha

Phew! I can consider myself untained then since I haven't any idea what a bantha is. I pass the test!

a bantha is a 'Star Wars' critter, if I am not mistaken...

did some quick research...
Banthas are fictional creatures in the Star Wars universe. They are large elephant-sized mounts, with long furry tails, that are native to the planet of Tatooine.[3 (Wikipedia)

They also have horns like a mountain goat...
