no, i wasnt joking, i simply meant precisely what you said; if someone holds a view or has a lifestyle that is different to mine (for whatever reason) i will not use that against them offensively or even bring it up in a negative light on the forum so long as they afford me the same right. however if your refering to seriously unlawful or immoral things then of course i agree the offender should be dealt with..

Yo!
Just to add something concerning myself.
In the rant on the crapness that is Earthsea (we cans till sue crap, cant we? we're not 5 year olds..!), I think I used a swear word or two.
Mainly the adjectival version of the word f**k on one occasion.

It was for several reasons.
First of all, people who've been one here for a while with me know that after an intial wave of childishness (I was pretty crazy back then... sorry about that), I barely swear at all.
I dont really swear in general conversation in real life either.
when I get really annoyed though, I do. Sometimes a lot.

After I saw Earthsea I was really annoyed.
I tried to hold myself back but one or two words eventually slipped in there. The only reason I didnt go back and delete them as I looked at the sentence I completed at the time was because I thought it would be censored anyway.
And I have seen the censored version of the word in this forum a few times. Though it has seemed out of place, the word itself has never annoyed me. only the context it was put in.

So if I have contributed to this, Im sorry.
If oyu know me through here you know it barely ever happens.

About the saying stuff like "Jesus Christ!" as a swear word, Im sorry, but I do not find that offensive as all.
I never use it as an offense to the religion or anything, so I find it OTT that one should be reprimanded for using that expression with nor intention of harm whatsoever.
It would be like being angry at a non-religious person just for saying "god" or "christ" as part of a sentence.

About anti Gay stuff.
I have nothing against gay people at all.
If someone is extremely prejudiced and stupid and insults gay people, sure it annoys me.
But theres nothing you can do about it, and if you dont personallly know the person, ignoring idiots is the best thing to do.

It's a little unfair to suggest that saying a word that doesn't offend you is okay. Just because you are not offended by it does not mean that others aren't.

And of course if you have no religious beliefs, using words like "God" isn't going to mean diddly-squat to you. It becomes a generic harmless curse, like any other mild expletive. Please note that I'm using "you" as a general term of conversation here, not "you" personally JRR.

And it's also completely unnacceptable to say "I use the word "god" in a way that isn't meant to offend." It doesn't work like that, if you use it out of context (of say a discussion on religion) then it is offensive no matter what your intention was.

Offence is never given, it's always taken.

Its like me saying the word **** isn't offensive because I don't mean it in a rude way...

I think we are all mature and sensible people here with a conscience and good taste. The next time we write a post that contains strong language, we should pay more attention to what we write and consider using alternative non-offensive language.

Well... it isn't offensive to me.
I’m very happy for you but that does not affect my point.

That's well said. Saddles did you coin that? What we should and shouldn't say doesn't come down to what would offend us, but what would offend others.

Saddles, I have to say that that is one of the best observations that I have seen, thank you. May I use it? It belongs up there with Theodore Roosevelt's quote, "There is no room in this country for hyphenated-Americanism", IMHO.

Having only entered this forum recently, I did not read this thread until just now and I must say that I agree wholeheartedly with the topic. I have a young man at work who cannot say a sentence without using an *extreme epithet* or two or three. To strike back in the same manner does not faze him, I don't think he even realizes that he is being made fun of. To say something to him directly only seems to work for a day or two.

As for the 'gay' issue, it may seem cliched, but some of my good friends over the years were 'gay'. My immediate boss at work in 'gay' and she is not afraid to tell you. To me, it's just like any other time when two people that are acquainted with one another and have to spend time together. We recognize our differences, but don't belabor them. It's not worth the effort.

Likewise, in this forum. I have no idea just what everyone's political, religious, sexual orientations are!
AND I DON'T CARE! Ask sanfan, I don't even know for sure what anyone's gender is and, except for mis-calling someone as 'him' or 'her', it really doesn't matter to me.

I just wanted to go on record and say that I completely agree with the general theme of this thread.
