Whisper soundtrack. I don't think any other ghibli soundtrack sounds better by itself. Nearly every track sounds good even without any accompanying scenes.
The Laputa soundtrack has a few tracks that don't sound good when you're not watching the movie, although I'd say it comes a close second. Mononoke Hime, at least a quarter are bad as standalone. Nausicaa IMO is just bad, so few pieces stand out while the others crumble.

speaking of the Totoro OST (sort of)
does anyone know where i could find some sweet remixes of some of those tracks, preferable "Path of Wind"?¿
(if there is any, that is)

Sorry to come back to Earthsea, I just watched the bonus DVD about the music. It was very interesting ^^
I can confirm that several themes are played with a Galician gaïta. But they also used a flageolet, a cromorn, a blowpipe and an ocarina for these themes. Terashima wanted to use some "traditionnal" instruments that sound like the usual bagpipe, which couldn't be used.
If I correctly understood what they said, the artist just used the blowpipe of the gaïta for the main theme.

Hi everyone. Sorry I havn't been online in ages.
Favourite tunes from the Ghibli series hmmm...
Valley of the Wind Finale- a true epic classic
Tonari no Totoro- very catchy and uplifting
Home Sweet Home at the end of Grave of the Fireflies- I know its not an original piece of music but its very well used in the film.
By for now. X

Ha.
Horus: Prince of the sun. Easily!
The anime itself isn't that great, I enjoyed it but prefer some of the other ghibli's. Horus seems to be more heavily westernised than the others and reminded me a lot of the early Asterix movies The music to it though is fantastc, I loved the piece where he's sailing on his little boat in the storm especially. The music really makes the movie what it is.

I bought the Spirited Away soundtrack (it's the only soundtrack to a Ghibli movie that anybody seems to sell around here!). It's pretty nice, but I was really hoping that this would be on it:

But it only seems to have they lyrics version.

After you wrote that, I started paying attention to the music in Whisper. It's amazing, I love it! Every tune is so great... except for the melancholy violin jingle, but I just don't pay attention to that. Actually, my favourite song is probably the one where she's chasing Moon from the train.
Except that I can't find the soundtrack anywhere; I just recorded the sound from my DVD to a CD. Which is actually surprisingly nice on its own... because now I get to hear the speech over and over in Japanese, and start to understand what they're saying. Soon I'll be able to watch it without subtitles! Oh, will that be weird...
Yeah, okay, so I'm strange. Pffft.

Haha, no not really strange.
I do it too, I'll quite often have dvd's or anime on my hard drive running through media center/player in the background while I work. Hell, I've even got Air running in the background while I'm typing this.

Useful, just keep breathing too and you'll be fine
I can't listen to any Ghibli music as BG noise, I find it so nice I have to stop and actually (shock, horror!) listen.
I have my GITS playlist on permanent cycle on my iPod ATM (115 songs!).

I think the most impessive thing about the score is that it remains coherent; the styles range from synthesizer-heavy pop to Renaissance-flavored orchestra, but no song ever feels out of place; they coexist peacefully--even complementarily--in a single musical palette.
Yes, I did spend quite some time on that sentence.

Whisper is indeed a great soundtrack, but I'm always surprised to see that Kiki's gets so little love in these threads. It's easily one of the most impressive Hisaishi soundtracks, if not quite as great as Whisper's. I mean, come on, listen to this:

Ooh... I haven't seen Kiki's in so long. Probably not in ten years.
That's why I didn't remember the soundtrack
But I really love the ending credits song. It makes me feel like flying.

There are two Kiki ending themes, the one issued on the US and British DVDs and the original Japanese one. The Japanese is by far the best, its pure 50s twist music and so upbeat, so - uh - happy-making. A lovely tune.

oh man...I think I'm gonna watch it tommorrow now. What a wonderful movie. It's been at least a years since I've seen it.
Howl's also has quite a strong soundtrack, though I think my favorites are the ones smack in the middle of he and Miyazaki's collaborations, starting with Totoro, moving on to Kiki's, and finishing with Porco. The ones before and after those don't make it into my stereo as much these days.
Only Yesterday's is wonderful as well, though it can be pretty different, what with all of the old-timey Japanese kid puppet show songs and such.
Actually, I love all the Ghibli soundtracks that I own, and the only ones that I don't have are Yamadas, Pom Poko, Ocean Waves, and Gedo Senki. Well, I guess I don't really LOVE the GOTF one, since it's more of a drama CD than a real soundtrack. What a pain.
Has anybody heard any of the high-tech series soundtracks? If they are good I'd love to get the Kiki's or Totoro's or Laputa's ones.

Hmm I think I don't have particular favourites just little memorable bits from here and then for example:
(Though i'm not sure some of these constitute as sound tracks)
Pom Poko- 'Mr Racoon, Mr Racoon etc.'
Whisper Of The Heart -'Country Road' (Is that what its called?)
Nausicaa- The song played when she has flashbacks and stuff (Anyone know what I mean? It doesnt have any words just a child-like voice singing 'do's)
Totoro- Opening song and ending.
Howl - that creepy song played when he almost has his powers taken away.

Fantasic song.
EDIT: also 'Shang Shang Typhoon' (?) from Pom Poko.
(Trouble finding download for it.)
